"Green Light" (I can start running again!)

Tuesday, September 10, 2013

Good news from my Orthopedic Dr this morning -- I got the green light to start running again, albeit VERY slowly to start! He also wants me to get some off the shelf orthotics to help cushion the Achilles tendon. I'll go look for those later this week.

But for today's run, I will set my Galloway app to a 1/1 mix (1 minute running / 1 minute walking), and just get in a nice easy run. I did a 3 mile power walk on Sunday in a little over 44 minutes, so I am going to shoot for a 40 minute run today.

I am so excited to be able to run!!

Yeah. I know what you mean, cause runners run. I stepped in a pot hole in the last 100 meters of 10km run. I mostly run at night and I just did not see it. But I felt it. I was off running for about six weeks. I was on track to complete 3000 km between Jan 1 and Dec 31 of that year. Well on track to finish in early Dec and the crunch happened in Nov . I had to be off running for almost six weeks and then to start slowly again.

Remember, start slowly and build gradually, like a new runner, like a sensible experienced runner.

I am happy for you

40 minutes sounds like an awfully long stretch of 1/1 intervals for just starting back; that's 20 minutes of total running time. Be mentally prepared to bail early, and be mentally prepared to come back with less if this doesn't work out well.

You *will* run again, and I hope you can handle those 40 minutes; but be ready with a Plan B if that turns out to be too much.

The only thing worse than coming back painfully slowly, is coming back too fast and having to do it all over again.
