Who says you have to starve to lose weight?

Monday, September 09, 2013

I rec'd this today and wanted to share this little bit of perspective:

One McDonald's Big Mac contains 540 calories, 29 grams of fat, and more than 40 grams of highly-processed, blood-sugar-spiking carbohydrates. emoticon

And that doesn't even count the fries and soft drink that you KNOW you're going to order with it. emoticon

At the same rate, here are a few alternative food choices and amounts that will land you at the same 540 calories: emoticon

140 medium strawberries
5 medium bananas
1 QUART of plain Greek yogurt
14 oz of grilled chicken breast
17 cups of broccoli
6 and 1/2 cups of blueberries

Better yet, go ahead and eat ALL of this in one sitting:

4 oz of grilled chicken (120 cals)
3 cups of broccoli (90 cals)
1 medium banana (100 cals)
8 oz of plain Greek yogurt (130 cals)
10 medium strawberries (40 cals)
1/2 cup of blueberries (40 cals)

So basically, you have an OVERFLOWING plate of chicken and veggies and then a HUGE dessert of yogurt and fruit. I mean, that's a massive quantity of food right there. In fact, most people wouldn't even be able to finish it. emoticon

And guess what? It still contains fewer calories than ONE Big Mac and it's WAY healthier. emoticon

Simply put, you don't have to starve yourself (at all) to lose weight and shed those stubborn pounds...you just need to learn how to choose the right foods, and then eat your heart out. emoticon

Thanks, always nice to see a different perspective. I remember when I was just researching portions and calories, I thought I'd starve if I ate a 400cal meal! Thank goodness for veggies!

You are so right! I am eating little and often, eating 5 times a day! Yet I am losing more weight now, in the past week, than I have lost in a year! I know I am only on week 2 and finding it difficult to adjust to eating 5 small meals instead one huge one a day, but so far so good and I am never hungry. It can and does work to eat and eat well! emoticon

You are SOOO right! On the odd instance when I have to eat fast food, I hate to take in those calories, and always order a junior burger or grilled chicken sandwich. Not great, but better than the "plus sizes"...

As an "I'm changing my lifestyle" strategy, I have been trying to concentrate on finding the most delicious ways to eat fruits and veggies. You're right! You can have a whole lot of those compared to the volume of junk food you'd get for the same calories.

Thanks so much for sharing this with us. What a great way to look at it. Just putting it down on paper helps a person realize just what we are eating. Sometimes it is kind of scary. The best part is that we get to eat all that "good" food. emoticon emoticon emoticon

    It is definitely about choices.
It is also about setting yourself a sensible calorie limit. You do not have to set such a low limit, that you feel deprived. If you even just cut about 300 calories from your needed calories to maintain your weight, and go for a 10 minute stroll each day, you still will lose about a pound a week. To put that in perspective, that is 56 pounds a year... and you do not even feel like you are dieting... I know... That is what I have been doing. It truly works.
