Prep Ride

Sunday, September 08, 2013

I loaded up my bike with tent, sleeping bag and dual panniers (all graciously loaned to me from TEAMAGIS, our bike club's president!) for a ride to the Colorscape festival in Norwich yesterday. Met up with a few bike club members in Greene, one of whom is fellow SP member STRIVERONE who has decided to join our ranks and is now a member of the Southern Tier Bicycle Club...woo hoo!

He and I are fairly well matched on the bike as well, pretty complementary pace. I was fretting about the extra payload slowing me down a lot but STRIVERONE said, nope...didn't look like I was going any too! Except of course on the hills...oof, thx goodness for those granny gears! :-) Cycling isn't STRIVERONE's main event, however...he just ran TWENTY-SIX MILES the day before...! I could not IMAGINE running such a distance!

But it's pretty cool to have two formerly morbidly obese dudes biking all over the countryside yesterday, 60+ miles for me and 40+ miles for him. We mostly shook off the other bike club

Starting to get ready for the BIG RIDE coming self-supported, thumbing-my-nose-at-hotels bicycle tour of Cape Cod! More than way nervously assembling everything, double-triple-checking. Awfully glad to be going with seasoned self-supported touring pros. Hoping I don't feel TOO self-conscious and make TOO many mis-steps.

PRAYING for no rain! And actually, right now it doesn't appear that there will be...but I know better than to count on weather forecasts so far out in the future. Temps are looking around 65-75 range for day time and 42-60 range for night time...which should be do-able.

Onward! :-)

Wow! Sounds absolutely fabulous. You make me so jealous because my knee can no longer take the motion of pedaling since about 1998. I tried a spin class last year forgetting all about my knee until I got off the bike and couldn't walk very well.
Have fun in Cape Cod and make sure you take lot of pics!

Whopee -- I didn't know about these spectacular plans! Did they surface in conversations during the Labor Day event? I LOVE IT when you're livin' out your dreams! Cycle on my friend!!! The trip sounds sublime and I'm thrilled to hear about your cycling buddy! The only thing that disturbs me are your occasional "walk on eggshells" tapes! Just stop that -- lol!

Sonnets to Orpheus, Part Two, XXIX

Quiet friend who has come so far,
feel how your breathing makes more space around you.
Let this darkness be a bell tower
and you the bell. As you ring,

what batters you becomes your strength.
Move back and forth into the change.
What is it like, such intensity of pain?
If the drink is bitter, turn yourself to wine.

In this uncontainable night,
be the mystery at the crossroads of your senses,
the meaning discovered there.

And if the world has ceased to hear you,
say to the silent earth: I flow.
To the rushing water, speak: I am.

Great blog, as always! Love the images you remind us all to embrace:
our former selves as motivation
we have choices that allow us to "make it happen"-even if it involves granny gears-you still made those hills!
Hoping and praying you have fabulous weather for the Cape ride. You sound a bit like a college kid getting ready to hike/hostel Europe-LOL.

Love the prep ride concept -- and the two "formerly morbidly obese guys" ghost image too because I know for myself . . . never fully leave that one behind, always shocked a little when I catch sight of my current reflection!! Oh well, helps keep us motivated to keep on keeping on, right?

Oh, the weather sounds great for riding. And I bet even if you do mis-step, no one will care. I find that people on these rides are very supportive. Hoping you have a great time.
