My Father's Words

Sunday, September 08, 2013

My father died over 15 years ago, but his words live on in my heart and mind.
The other day I was driving down the highway to get to work on time, and I heard those words:
"Remember, Jackie, driving above the speed limit will not save you any time. If you get pulled over by a policeman, it will take a good 15 minutes. Longer, if they are not in a good mood. Always drive the speed limit or less."
Yes, I slowed down, and I smiled at the wisdom of my Dad.
What are you saying to the people around you that they will remember when you are gone?

An old photo of my Dad Bill Gray with his brother Bob.

Amazing what our parents teach us that linger after they are gone. I've thought of the same thing too when I'm in a rush to get somewhere that if I get stopped it will take me longer. Wise man. Like the pic.

It's amazing how we can continue to be guided by the wisdom of our elders, long after they can no longer offer us any direct assistance.

It's like one of my favorite sayings: "There are only two things we can give our children; one is roots; the other is wings."

You've been given both!

Thanks for sharing! Thankfully my dad is still here and we have dinner together every Friday night. One thing he always said was that people will judge you by the words you use...save the slang for your friends. I feel like that is the reason I got every job I've ever interviewed for. Thanks Dad, and thanks Jackie!!

Good for your wise father and good for you listening! Also reduces the risk of getting in an accident or responding to a road emergency..
Enjoy your Sunday!

My dad got me my first job at his company. He said, "You WILL not embarrass me." That was over 30 years ago, and it's always in the back of my mind to make my father proud of me.

Thanks for that reminder. Your last question is thought provoking. I wonder what I've said that people still remember.

My father died in 2001, yet like you, every day I think of something he told me. Every day I think of something he told me, and I repeat it to my family. "My father told me......" That way he lives on.

I told all my children not to wish their life
away by being in a hurry. That special day
will come and go so be content with where
you are now.
