Beware FaceBook scams

Friday, September 06, 2013

Hackers and scammers never sleep. They're always looking for new ways to trick you and take your information and money.

Facebook is becoming one of their favorite targets. I've warned you in the past about common Facebook scams to avoid.

Well, there's a new Facebook scam making the rounds. So far it's tricked an estimated 800,000 users, and it's still spreading like crazy.

Here's how it works: A post might show up in your news feed. Or maybe you'll get an email or Facebook message.

It will tell you that a Facebook friend has tagged you in a video and give you a link to watch the video. That sounds fairly normal so far.

If you click on the link, however, you'll see a message that you need a browser plug-in or extension to watch the video. This is where things get bad.

Once installed, the extension sends your email and social media account usernames and passwords back to the hackers. They can go through your accounts looking for sensitive information.

They also use your accounts to send the same fake message to your friends. That's how the virus keeps spreading.

That's why you have to be careful of even downloading stuff from the net and even email too. Virus gets spread that way too! I once had the start button shut down bcoz of a virus. We had to reformat the whole PC to get rid of the virus!

I was on FaceBook last year, although I was not on it much. But one day I got a comment on my wall, I think that is what it's called, that I had and/or was doing awful things that I would never even think of doing, much less actually do. I was so embarrassed & hurt. So I had a friend shut down the account and erase all signs of it off my computer. I want NOTHING to do with FaceBook ever again!!!!!!

yikes. this is why I don't open messages from folks I don't know. I even have my coworker put "yes, it's from me" in the title line since I was getting weird messages from folks whose Emails seemed to be hacked.

Oh wow, I've not heard of this one. I know of the one where people are hacking your profile and adding your friends, they think it's you and then they end up being hacked. These people ask for money and all kinds of things. Recently they've been going after Wal*Mart associates. Not sure why. Thank you for the warning though, I'll be sure to make others aware of it!
