Only One Goal

Thursday, September 05, 2013

Each month the A&I Team prompts us to write about our goals - looking at how last month went and how we want to proceed for the next few weeks. Since the first of the year it has been hard for me to write this kind of "goals" blog. My health went into a steep downward spiral and I just couldn't seem to wrap my mind around writing detailed expectations for what I would accomplish. At that time I was having trouble accomplishing getting up, or taking a shower or getting dressed!!! Somehow those didn't seem like traditional goals and I couldn't imagine anyone wanting to read about how narrow my life had become.

Now, eight months later, I am beginning to show small improvements. My health is not where it was a year ago, but I am slowly finding more energy and experiencing less pain. WooHoo! And my thoughts about goal-setting have changed as well.

I realized that I do indeed have a goal - it just looks a lot different than the ones I set when I started Spark:

MY GOAL = I WILL PUT ONE FOOT IN FRONT OF THE OTHER!

Only one goal, but for me, right now, it's all I need. Each day I will start wherever I am and put one foot in front of the other. On a good day I may be ready for a walk, some house-cleaning and a visit with friends.

Not every day is like that, however. But my goal still holds. I can do the best I can with the strength and energy given me for that day.

It's all about doing what we can when we can. Taking it one day at a time and putting one foot in front of the other is the best way to approach this. I'm sorry you've had so much health issues this year but it sounds like you are improving and doing the best you can with each day.

The one foot in front of the other statement makes me think of the Christmas claymations I use to watch when I was a kid. There was one with Rudolph and Santa Claus where Burl Ives, if I remember correctly, was singing "Just put one foot in front of the other and pretty soon you'll be walking out the door." emoticon

I'm not a blogger but can identify with every word of this one and love the pics & quotes that are used. I'm going to be a copycat and adopt the "one foot in front of the other" as my daily goal.

What a emoticon blog CJ. I love the pictures and quotes you have included and boy can I relate to what you have said about having trouble getting up and taking a shower. That has been hubby's life for months now. I love your goal for this month and I am encouraging my hubby to set that same goal for himself. Thank you for the inspiration! You are emoticon and emoticon this. emoticon emoticon

Not sure what you've been dealing with physically, but I also have been dealing with health issues this summer (not nearly as long as you have for a year!), and I agree with you, it IS hard to blog about normal goals - and for me, it's been hard to write without whining about my issues... so I haven't blogged much... (if I can't say anything nice, I'll say nothing at all...)

So... thank you for sharing your journey... and for the encouragement to keep one foot in front of the other. :)
