Lupron Depot Journal, Day 3

Thursday, September 05, 2013

Well, last night I (unwisely) went and read a whole bunch of horror story posts about Lupron. Not helpful! I've already committed to this course of treatment, so freaking myself out won't do me any good. So, I'm thinking about what I can do to minimize my anxiety.

The next five months are going to be difficult, and I'll need to work hard at staying positive, healthy, and feeling in control, health-wise. I decided it would be good, and maybe help somebody else down the line, to journal my experiences on this drug.

(Background: I'm 43 years old, planning a laparoscopic hysterectomy on Dec. 20th. My doctor recommended 4 months of Lupron to shrink my very large fibroid so that I don't have to have an open incision and longer recovery. After careful consideration, I agreed to try the Lupron. He also prescribed Gabapentin for side effects, but after I had one pill and experienced health issues the next day and for a week afterward, I have decided not to take the Gabapentin unless the Lupron side effects become unbearable.)

I had my first one-month shot on 9/3, so today is the third day. So far, no side effects, unless headaches count—it's hard to tell, since I have frequent headaches anyway. I did have trouble sleeping last night, but I'm sure it was from the self-inflicted anxiety. My starting weight is 189Lbs, with 17Lbs. remaining to my goal weight. I'll be continuing to do strength training and cardio as much as I can, and tracking my food. I don't have expectations of losing any weight while on this drug, but I'll do what I can to keep the gain to a minimum.

Other plans: I've started a regular regimen of supplements to help prevent bone loss, for adrenal support, and help with other side effects. Here's the list:

Morning—
Vitamin E 400IU
Calcium Citrate w/Vitamin D3 400IU
Ferrous Sulfate (Iron) 65mg
High potency B "100" complex
Daily Multivitamin

Evening—
Calcium Citrate w/Vitamin D3 400IU
Magnesium 425mg
Stress-Relax Tranquil Sleep

Other—
Eden Pond Turmeric Curcumin 1000mg
NOW Foods Ginger Root 550mg
Carlson Super Omega-3 1000mg
Spring Valley Green Tea Extract Herbal
Adren-Alive herbal supplement

I'll also be staying alcohol-free for the foreseeable future, at least until I've recovered from the surgery and the Lupron has had a chance to clear my system, which will be around February 2014. Six months without alcohol! I would have thought that impossible before about a month ago, but thanks to our SP team, I went through most of August AF. Now I know I can do it.

Sounds like you are taking good care of yourself. Blogging helps with the anxiety because it releases the thoughts from our minds (puts it on black and white) and then you have support from others to help you through! We're here for you for the long haul! emoticon
