Phew, it's been a busy few weeks, y'all! I haven't had much time for Sparking but now - I'm baaaaack!
First, I had surgery to repair the butt-wound that I've been fighting with since last Thanksgiving. The surgery went well and now it's just a matter of healing up and seeing if the fix takes. I'm on heavy-duty antibiotics, eating lots of yogurt, eating lots of fiber, and hoping for the best. Fingers crossed!
Then, I moved! No more teeny tiny apartment with no room to walk, much less work out. I'm now in an apartment that takes up the whole first floor of a small house. I can walk to work in 15 minutes and my living room is plenty big for working out in the comfort of my own home. I was able to get all my furniture out of storage, and my kitchen actually has so many cabinets that I couldn't fill them all! This has never happened before. There is plenty of counter space for cutting up veggies, and lots of windows so it doesn't get too stuffy. Cooking is fun again and I am super-excited about all the delicious healthy things I will be eating in the future! And I actually have a normal size fridge/freezer so I can cook and freeze my own ready made meals for those days when school gets crazy. I freaking love this apartment - pics to come as soon as I finish unpacking!
And finally, school started last week. I'm now a second year graduate student, which is soooooo weird! There are all these new students running around and they just seem so so young. At 29 I'm one of the older students in the department, and these fresh-faced first years seem so green and enthusiastic. (And now I'm picturing myself in a couple of years, shaking a pipette in my fist and yelling "hey you kids, get off my equipment! Hehe). I think this is going to be a great semester, though. The newbies seem like a really good group, even if I can't quite relate to being straight out of college. I'm taking two difficult data analysis classes so by the end of the semester I should be really good at taking oodles of DNA sequences and turning them into understandable information. And that is a skill that should be in high demand when I do finally graduate!
So, that's my life in a nutshell. I will own up to living off of frozen meals, takeout, and ice cream while my kitchen was in disarray last week. But I've found all my kitchen toys and dusted off my Fitbit, so between eating well and walking a lot I should be MUCH healthier from here on out. Happy Sparking - I missed you guys!
