Does appetite reduce with age?

Tuesday, September 03, 2013

I turn 40 in a month and a half. Often, I have heard people saying that they can't eat like they ate before and attribute it to age.

So, does age affect appetite?

I am seriously hoping it does. I have been exercising religiously for 4 years now - it has become part of what I am. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about my diet.

So here's to age

Hope that IT actually regulates appetite - I could use all the help I can get.

I'm older than you, so I may be able to give some perspective. I've found that my appetite did not decrease with age. I consider myself to have a robust appetite and part of that is due to my active lifestyle. Because I engage in a regular exercise routine, I eat. To stay healthy and maintain lean muscle, you need to "feed" that muscle.

I've read articles that have said as we age our appetites decrease. but there is also an assumption that as we age, we need fewer calories because we're not as active as when we are younger. This really does vary from person to person and it does depend on how active they are.

When I was over weight, I ate too much. Today, I know I am eating less not because I am older, but because I am more mindful of my portions. I think as we age, we acquire wisdom. It's knowing about good nutriton and a healthy lifestyle is what really effects our appetites. At least, that's what I think.

My appetite has reduced over the past 6 months due to "retraining myself" - learning to eat smaller quantities of higher-quality food. Nothing to do with getting older.

On the flip-side, I've discovered that "age" has not been any barrier to being able to adopt and adapt to a new way of eating, or to lose weight.

I'm 64 and my appetite is smaller...but maybe it's common sense and not age!
I've finally learned that if I clean up my plate, I'll be uncomfortably full and if I eat a donut or French fries, I'll suffer with indigstion.

Whatever the reason, I'm glad it has finally happened!

I'm 70. My appetite has reduced, but I think that's thanks to SP and not old age! I'm actually hungrier now I've reached my goal weight!
