How to Keep From Starting Over

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

(I just posted these thoughts in response to another member on the message boards, and I want to remember them for myself. Maybe they'll be useful to someone else, too.)

Consider all the setbacks part of one journey. Then, when you encounter them, you don't see them as an end or a failure, just a rough patch. Remember that what matters is that you keep going, no matter how many times you've faltered, fallen down, gained some weight back, gained it all back, etc. We've all done those things. We've all had those moments and months. That's life. Just keep going.

It helps me to look for what I can learn from the setbacks and stumbling points. What was going on for me that I fell down, and what can I adjust to take better care of myself?

Planning is a good tool to prevent setbacks. So is compassion for yourself. Be kind to yourself when you have a slip. See it as part of a total picture of progress, rather than a failure. Don't throw out a dozen eggs because you drop one on the floor, if you follow me. Just clean up the mess as best you can, and continue cooking.

Fall down 100 times, get up 101 and you're a success.

I feel like I've been working on the same 10 pounds for most of my life! I have weighed more at times and weighed less at other times! I find that if I keep trying to add fitness and nutrition to my page, I can stay focused on healthier choices! Don't give up! Keep trying!

Great blog -- I've shared with readers and patients to remind them of that 101st time!

One way to look at creating a healthy lifestyle is that it takes a great deal of time, adjustment and GROWING UP. A problem you can't handle without excess food today maybe one, if you stop and study the circumstances and come up with alternative ways of coping, that won't stump you next time. It's a good idea to begin a catalog of alternative coping strategies that you can refer to when you're under the worst of stress.

You can also practice the fine art of adapt and adjust. Imagine easy scenarios: your cable goes out when you want to watch a favorite TV show or the grocery store doesn't have an ingredient you rely on; the item you ordered doesn't fit right or look the way it did in a catalog; it rains instead of being fair weather. How can you adapt and adjust to these imagined small problems? When you get comfortable with the exercise, move on to more frightening ones.

A healthy lifestyle is a journey not a script. What is healthy for you now may not be in a year or twenty years. I tell my patients and readers NOT to look at "starting over" but at picking up where they left off after due consideration of what made them detour. It's even possible that we aren't ready for some life events without breaking our lifestyle rules. The point is to never lose hope, never lose intention and to learn from experience. (And lose the word "mistakes" in the last word of that last sentence!)

Oh I love this. And I totally agree. This concept is, in my opinion, the biggest part of losing weight. I had never been successful until I started forgiving myself and moving on. I had a really rough day yesterday and so I allowed myself to eat horribly for that day. Because I honestly just needed a break from my diet. And while I feel a little slower for eating all that bad food, it was GREAT because it was not filled with regret. I knew I would limit myself and move on to eating well after that one day.

One day will not make a difference in your weight loss journey. It is what you chose to do with the next days that will.

Thanks so much for posting!

You have here a highly inspirational blog which was a joy to read - well done.
