Hello, September!

Monday, September 02, 2013

I love it when a new month starts! It's like a clean slate, and as you know I really need one right now. Since my last entry and my reality check I've been doing a lot better. It's impossible to be in denial once you put it all out there and admit you're headed in the wrong direction.

Today I've kept my calories very low because I really want to give my body a break after a whole weekend of indulgence. It wasn't as bad as before, but I definitely ate more than I normally do. We were out of town this weekend, visiting family and spending time at the lake house. Lots of barbecuing and dessert. WHY OH WHY DO I LOVE BAKING SO MUCH??? It certainly doesn't help! I wish I could bake something every day but I can't because then I'll have a bite... And another... And another... And you know how it goes!

Anyway, today I've been giving my body a chance to reboot by drinking lots and lots of water, herbal teas and smoothies packed with fresh fruit and leafy greens. It feels wonderful to eat less some days! I'm not even hungry. I was a little hungry earlier today but now I'm just feeling energetic and good. I made a meal plan for the week and there are some delicious things on the menu, such as baked zucchini parmesan, butternut squash soup with roasted almonds, healthy pumpkin and bacon pasta, stuffed tomatoes and mushroom and halloumi burgers.

Oh, man. I just LOVE food. Can you tell already? I love cooking and baking so much, and it's good because I can come up with healthier versions of my favorite recipes and use lots of fresh veggies when I cook! I keep up with a lot of food blogs and find lots of recipes there as well. I used to eat so much unhealthy stuff I never could imagine eating these days. Like processed foods, for example. These days, I really make an effort to make everything pretty much from scratch if I have the time. And if I crave a burger with fries, I make a healthy and delicious home-made burger with a side of oven baked zucchini fries or potato wedges instead of going to McDonald's. Tastes so much better, too!

So much about food! I'm so happy it's September. Fall is my favorite season (well, actually spring is, but fall comes pretty close!) and I'm so looking forward to exercising outside now that the weather is finally beginning to cool.

As for my September goals, all I have to say is this: I'm going to make healthy choices, plan ahead and stick to my plan, eat lots of healthy foods with LOTS of fresh veggies, move my body every day, and weigh myself once a week. My goal is to lose the rest of the weight I gained back (about 5 pounds) this month. I'm sure it'll come off easily! I'm just going to re-introduce myself to healthy living as I've been straying a bit over the past few months. Now it's time to go back to basics. Nothing too drastic, just a few well placed tweaks here and there.

HAPPY SEPTEMBER EVERYONE! Let's make the most of it :)

One of the things I like about September is the cooler temps allow us to reinstate some of our healthy favs that are a bit warmer and heavier, like the soups and pastas and still enjoy the grilled veggies a bit longer. The best of both seasons!

Love what your goals are, just simple, me too, I am just doing a simple walking thing on spark, never did too many challenges, but this I can do on my own, so that is good.
I always love baking too, but I had to cut back on that, still do on holidays, for family and friends. Look forward to seeing your recipes.
Good luck, have a great September. emoticon

PS: I'm with you in that I *love* fall. It's my favorite time of the year, actually--even better than spring, though it always seems much too short. I love the crisp air, the scent of the leaves, the color on the trees... Just love it.

Sounds like September is off to a great start!!! I think it's okay to love food, as long as you focus on eating GOOD food (which tastes great) and enjoying it in moderation. There's a movement out there on really paying attention to food--if you slow down while you are eating and really focus on what your are eating and how it tastes, not only is eating a more rewarding experience, but are more satisfied... and eat less. (Words for me to work on, I'm afraid--I tend to eat too quickly and while distracted).

And it's great that you like cooking! If I didn't have a husband who likes cooking okay, I'd be sunk because I *hate* cooking. I really don't enjoy it at all, and I tend to resent time spent in the kitchen because it's time I could/should be spending doing something else. Thankfully, my husband "gets" me and so not only cookes healthy dinners but makes sure I have easy but healthy options (like salads where I just have to combine the ingredients in a bowl) for lunch. LOL!

And nom nom nom on the sweet potato fries... I always hated sweet potatoes (my mom only cooked them for holidays, prepared with butter, brown sugar and I think maple syrup? Not sure but UGH far too sweet. I have never liked them, not even when I was a kid). But I have recently discovered that I *love* them if they are baked, fried, or otherwise prepared in a savory (instead of sugar laden) fashion. YUM. I like them better than potato fries so I eat them instead now... and don't feel deprived in the slightest!

Happy September! I too look forward to Fall and the cooler weather, it sure beats sweating in 90+ degree heat!

Sometimes our bodies do need a re-boot, going back to what worked for us before we started adding in a few too many "cheats and tweaks" to our plans. Lots of water is an excellent way to get things moving in the right direction again, it's my go to tactic when I've been bad :)
