(hopefully temporary) Dairy Free Lifestyle?! - yikes!

Thursday, August 29, 2013

Happy Thursday Sparkers! I am at 1,178 fitness minutes so far in August - hopefully I hit my goal of 1300 minutes! I Will be going for a walk tonight if the weather is nice. Then maybe I will go for a run this weekend! I am watching the pups all weekend, so I can take them for long walks too!

I am at 160 on the scale right now. I don't feel any bigger, and I am also not really upset with this. It could be the change in diet (see below) or it could be muscle? I nthe past two weeks I went to kickboxing 3 times, did archery, frisbee golf for 4 hours, did pilates, went for walks etc.... Even though the scale shows the higher weight, it isn't bringing me down. I am liking my body more and more each day. Even during pilates, when I saw my extra flub all scrunched up, I was just happy that I was in class trying to better myself! I have a wedding to go to on Sunday, and I am curious to see how my body looks in the dress!

I have been having some stomach problems. My upper stomach area has been cramping, and I have been having a lot of gas (sorry - TMI!) I went to the Dr. last week because of the problem. At first I thought it was just something bad I ate, but the problem continued for almost a month! The Dr had me take a lot of sample tests, and he also gave me some digestion pills which apparently are given to people that have IBS. The Doctor said to stay away from all dairy because my stomach may not be able to handle it anymore.... part of my routine was to eat a yogurt EVERY week day morning for breakfast!

My stomach has been feeling a little better, but I still have random problems. It is difficult for me to not have dairy. At first I didn't think it would be so bad, because I thought all I had to do was cut out the yogurt from the mornings. It has been over a week now, and I am struggling to find things that have no milk products in it!

My diet is strict enough. Now I keep having to cut more and more food out! Just the thought of having to say no to some of my favorite foods makes me a little sad! I can alter the food AGAIN, but it is already hard enough to find something for me to eat!

PROBLEM FOODS IN MY NORMAL DIET:

-Chicken sausage - all the chicken sausage in the house has cheese in it!
-I started having cereal on the weekends BUT half of the kind in the house have YOGURT Clusters!
-Plus I had to buy some dairy free almond milk to add to the cereal
-I have these Summer Berry Oatmeal cups.. that contain dry milk!
-Breakfast Granola - has yogurt clusters in it!
-Turkey or black bean Tacos - fat free cheese & fat free sour cream!
-FF ranch dip uses plain sour cream
-Wheat Lasagna! - cheese!
-Turkey Chili - FF sour cream!
-Low Cal Caesar Salad - cheese!
-Egg White Omelettes - Milk! and sometimes FF Cheese!
-Sugar Free pudding made with milk!
-Grilled Chicken Panini with mozz cheese!

I am trying to figure out how to deal with this new dilemma! I NEED to read every food label now. Hopefully my test results come back ok and I can start eating dairy again. I used to say no cheese to many things, but now I have to check everything I eat to make sure there is no dairy in it! I could spend more money on the dairy-free products, but what if I don't like them? Money is already tight!

I am going to do some online research. Maybe http://www.godairyfree.org/ will help me out. There seem to be a lot of recipes on there, but it looks like a lot of them call for dairy-free products. Hopefully I can figure out recipes that don't need any substitutes. Most articles I read just tell me what to replace dairy with. Vegan?! - ahhh!!! I already don't eat red meat!

Hopefully everyone has a great rest of the week. Keep Sparking over this holiday weekend!

Well go with how the clothes fit more than the scale. Your probably gaining muscle. BTW, you look good! You got that right on reading the labels, you never know what throw in there. Hopefully you will find a replacement.

Try some lactaid products. They have milk and cottage cheese at least. In some states, yogurt too.

Sorry for that you had to give up the dairy. But may not be forever. Once you get better, you might able to eat again. You looks great on those picture. Keep on keeping on!! emoticon

I feel for you. I only do fermented dairy and rarely still. Milk solids are the worst for discomfort...they're in a lot of packaged food and crappy chocolate. You're doing the right thing in giving it a good go, you may find you're happier without it. (Trying my best not to go on my dairy soapbox. Heheh.)

You look great! I can't imagine giving up dairy. I love me some cheese so that would be very difficult for me. I hope your tests come back that you don't have a problem!

I went dairy free for a month this summer, hoping it would help ease some of my issues, and it was HARD. I ended up eating a lot of almond-based yogurt products, and I found some good plant-based protein powder for after weight lifting (which I've kept instead of going back to whey-protein even though I can have dairy again). I discovered I don't like almond milk by itself, but rice milk is okay for cereal and such. Dairy thankfully didn't end up being the problem for me - no reaction to taking it away or adding it back in - but that month was one of the hardest ever for me! Easier to give up wheat or flour than dairy!! Good luck!

Glad to see you aren't freaked out about the uptick on the scale. You're still improving your fitness, and you still have a fabulous attitude!

So sorry about the dairy issue. I have IBS, and changing my diet sucked pretty bad. Hopefully you will find some nice alternatives that you enjoy.
