Junk Food Left for College the Other Day.

Wednesday, August 28, 2013

I miss my son dearly. emoticon There has been a lot of tears in the house. But I am so happy for him and excited for the journey that he will be taking. I am almost envious.

However, there is one and only one thing that I am not going to miss while he is away..............the JUNK FOOD!!!

Now, I know what your thinking. I am the one who does the grocery shopping. Why did I bring it in the house? Why did I allow the Junkie to live in my pantry all these years? Well, in my defense, I do provide my children with nutritious healthy food. They rarely eat fast food. I cook, on the average, 6 days a week. But they are kids. They like to have something sweet after dinner and they like to have a snack after school. I try to pick lower calorie snacks like baked chips, or pretzels. They usually like oreos for dessert. However, my son is a bottomless pit!! I feel like I was constantly buying this stuff. Plus, he was buying stuff on his own. He is 6'1" and 155 lbs. Not sure where it all goes!

So, the other day when I was packing up my first born, I also packed up the Junkie living in the pantry. He's been taking up space in that pantry long enough. I still have a daughter at home, but she is really good about not over indulging in these snacks. As much as I would have loved to send my son with fruits and vegetables, we all know, that would never happen. I gave him the speech about how he needs to eat his vegetables while he is away. He said, " I will eat corn, potatoes and onion rings". Oh well, at least I tried.

So it was nice to send that Junkie packing. I've been trying to evict him from my pantry for too long. I have a feeling in May he will be back for a visit, but he will be on a short term lease.

Well boys will be boys and they burn it all off. I'm pretty positive that there is no way you could convince him that he has to eat all of his fruits and veggies.
Anyway, congrats on getting him off to college. My daughter leaves Sunday and although I've already gone through this with my son and send my daughter off once before (then she came back) its still hard and we miss them dearly, but we know in our hearts we are doing right by them. They will be strong, independent adults and we can pat ourselves on the back for that!!
On the bright side..... I agree... When they move out the junk food goes with them. I still have two "boys" in the house..... husband and son who like their treats and junk sometimes, so I definitely have to be careful and steer clear of what I know is lurking in those cupboards. It's all about control ... emoticon
Good luck to your son. I know you will miss him, but he'll be back before you know it! ..... and wlll probably be eating even more!!

Ha, must be nice, that feeling of taking back control! Just when I think I'm taking back control, something happens to sabotage it. Between them, my mother and our lodger just bought me 2 kilos of Liquorice Allsorts! It's now hiding in my pantry; out of sight, out of mind!

Transition times are not easy. I hope that you have set up a time that you can call each week or that he will call you. It's important to keep in touch. Good for you for looking at the bright side of things.

Good blog!
My younger son was like that, He got too heavy as he approached 40, and now he has become a healthy-food-and-exercise-fanatic who gives me lots of encouragement!

That's funny. When I send my DS a care package, it usually has junk food in it, and I feel guilty, but send it anyway. Unfortunately my DH and DS2 - are still massive junk consumers.

emoticon Way to look on the bright side!! I feel the same way with the food. My 3 boys are only going to get worse with that as they age. It's not easy to enforce the fruits and veggies on them. I would definitely have a hard time with the whole college transition too! The time goes by too fast! emoticon emoticon

I just sent my son to college also and I miss him. He was not into junk food but loved to cook high fat food network gourmet foods. Now he is living on frozen burritos!

Glad your got rid of Junkie! I am sure these kids will remember to eat healthy vegetables at some time..LOL
