Today Vonblackbird's blog: "'Oooey Gooey'" goodness" reminded me of a family story.
When my DH was very young...about three or so, his mother placed some creamed onions on his little plate.
"Those are ooey gooies and they are yummy," she assured him. He recalls looking at the little white spheres nestled in white sauce, and thinking they might be sweet reached for his spoon to try them out.
After Mother had gone back into the kitchen, old brother Buddy hissed, "Silly, those aren't 'ooey gooies', they're o-n-i-o-n-s."
Needless to say, Mother was not too pleased.
Now the rest of the tale is that my mother prepared creamed onions, one of her favorites, for every Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner.
We youngsters were expected to eat some (even just a little) of everything served.
That's when I learned the lesson to do what was the most distasteful first. I would take two creamed onions and try to mash them onto a bit of my turkey. For me it wasn't the taste that bothered so much as the consistency...like raw eggs...oooooo.
For my favorite thing and my least favorite in my high school year book, I listed "people" and " creamed onions". When DH and I met, we discovered that our one major dislike was the same..those creamed "ooey gooies"...YAY!
