Don't Forget the Bacon

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

It’s like Nicole’s personal restaurant week, and it’s going to continue as we approach my husband’s birthday. I love freebies.

My husband and I went to Houlihans to use my free entree birthday deal ( wp.me/p1N36Q-fU ) – worth up to $15! Pretty generous of Houlihans if you ask me. One of the things I like about Houlihans is that they have a mobile optimized website, so it’s pretty easy to navigate to their nutrition information if you’ve forgotten to do so before you get there (although the menus are NOT mobile optimized – so just be prepared to do SOME pinching and zooming).

Not only can you easily navigate to calories/carbs/etc, but they make it pretty easy to get to their Gluten Free page – but, just like most other chain restaurants, they are not a Gluten Free environment. So Celiacs, beware.

I debated between the Fire Grilled Atlantic Salmon and the Brentwood Chicken Sandwich sans bun. In the end, bacon always wins out. When I ordered my sandwich, no bun – and asked for my side of tortilla chips and salsa – our server was very confused.

“So.. you want the chicken on top of tortilla chips?”

Actually, that didn’t sound all that bad. Improv chicken nachos!

I smiled at him. “Nope, just on the side.” I suppose I just need to get used to putting in strange orders.

When my plate was served, something was clearly amiss.

There’s chicken under there somewhere… and I see the cheese… but where’s the bacon?!

Seriously, restaurants really need to start working on their presentation of food if they are going to offer Gluten Free suggestions ( wp.me/p1N36Q-3g ). I really was looking forward to that bacon, though. I double checked under the cheese to see if maybe it was special “hidden” bacon, but no luck. It was bacon of the “invisible” variety.

I indicated my dismay to my husband, and then said out loud “I guess I don’t really NEED bacon, right? I’ve got plenty of protein here.”

But it was a lie. You always NEED bacon. Especially birthday bacon. Especially when you’ve made a conscious effort to forgo the bun.

When the server came back over, I politely informed him of my missing bacon. He apologized, and immediately delivered four strips of crispy bacon to my table. I’m sure that’s more than they usually put on the sandwich, so I was way happy.

Too much bacon meant skipping out on the Gluten Free Creme Brulee, though. Next time.

Thanks for all the Freebie ideas - just signed up for Houlihan's! Happy you got all that yummy hot bacon despite having to ask for it and good for you for sticking to your non-gluten guns.

Mmm. Can there ever be too much bacon?

    Atlantic salmon vs brentwood chicken.

Flavor-wise a no brainer: the chicken. All Atlantic salmon is farm raised. Alaska salmon is wild caught and so much tastier. I rarely bother with Atlantic salmon. I am spoiled.
