Conquering Negative Thoughts

This morning I was hit by a stream of negative thoughts...hard. Have you ever just felt these waves of negativity roll over you, making you want to hide in a hole in the ground and not come out? That's what I was feeling this morning before my workout. No, working out did not "cure" me of my bad mood, but it did help a little.

What also helps me when I'm feeling bad about myself is refocusing on the progress I'm making toward my goals by "talking back" to those thoughts. It also helps to put the thoughts into writing so I can better identify what I'm feeling/thinking and then write a response, kind of a self-directed "pep talk." I imagine that I am speaking to a good friend, and try to say what I might say to encourage him or her.

So my pep talk today went something like this: You are awesome. You have made so much progress toward your goal, and so what if there are other goals you haven't met? By focusing on your weight loss goal, you are building trust in yourself, confidence that you can achieve what you set out to achieve, and you are creating 1000's of positive changes in your life and health. Did I mention that you are awesome? So kick those mean thoughts to the curb, and start believing in yourself!

    Pep talks have been a lifeline for me. If I'm feeling so awful that I can't think of anything "peppy" on my own, I ask someone close to me to give me a pep talk.

That's a good idea about thinking about your hopes and dreams, and things you are grateful for. I'm going to keep a gratitude list in my phone and update it frequently!

    For sure ...Great to read your blog because sometimes I think I'm the only one to have these negative holes I can sink into. Being married to an optimist he just doesn't understand it at all!
I've been doing a short walk then workout followed by reflecting on the things I'm grateful for in my life then a couple of minutes thinking about my hopes and dreams.
Seems to be helping me get out of my foul mood.
I will try the pep talk emoticon
