Results from the Hormone Doctor

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

I saw a new doctor yesterday, specifically a neuropath that deals with hormonal issues in women. I was so freeking nervous about this since I have not had luck with doctors and this issue and even had to deal with some quacks (concentration camp PA). I did manage to NOT weigh in again at a doctor¡¦s office. I just cannot handle that issue right now. I have been working so hard on not letting the scale rule my life it would just not be good for me yet and yes, I am putting my head in the sand in regards to the scale ƒº

It started off with him asking a lot of questions and some where hard to answer since I have been feeling off for so long. I had all of my lab reports and a 4 page summary of what has been going on the for the past 20 years. I am a very analytical person (I am a quality engineer) and so I took all of my labs and out them in an easy to read spreadsheet and put similar tests together and what the optimal ranges should be and the units of measure and highlighted the ones that I had questions on and felt were relevant. He just kinda laughed and says that he sees this a lot from engineers and that it was very helpful.

He said that it looked like there was nothing in my diet that would be causing an issue (duh, I am one of the cleanest eaters out there and pretty sure that I am an orthorexic but that¡¦s for another blog). We discussed my exercise addiction a bit. Once he got to my labs he knew what my issue was. My thyroid is just not working right even with being on a pretty good dose of Armour thyroid meds. He did asked how I got my GP to put me on Armour since most traditional doctors do not (research and letting him know what I wanted for MY body is how).

Being on 90 mg of Armour, if it was just the fact that I am not making enough T3, that should have helped it but it did not and still left it in the gutter. What is happening is that I am not converting the T3 to T4 and it is just becoming reverse T3. It is important to get all three thyroid levels checked. He was not sure why but he had a fix and said that I should start feeling better within a couple of days, whooohoooooooooo. He reduced my Armour (the T3 hormone) and added Cylomel (T4 hormone). This should help my body actually convert the T3 to do the job it needs to do. Without doing a reverse T3 test, this may not have been detected and it probably what was happening last January when I first went in.

From www.stopthethyroidmadness.com ¡§Excess Reverse T3 is a growing problem for thyroid patients. It can be caused from chronic adrenal dysfunction (too high cortisol; too low cortisol) as well as having low ferritin/iron problems. Even low B12 and other imbalances, plus chronic stress, can cause the excess.¡¨ Luckily my cortisol levels are still good but the B12 and ferritin are low.

I started taking B12, selenium and iodine as these are all vitamins and minerals that support the thyroid. He also wrote a script to get me on BHRT for the low progesterone. He usually likes to tackle one issue at a time but said my case it would not hurt. I should be getting that in the mail in the next week. Hoping that the combination of the two is just what I need to get where I want to be both mentally and physically.

I did ask how he felt about HCG (and no, this did not cause my thyroid issue, I have had this for a long long time). He had in the past prescribed it for patients and it worked for them but chooses to not do it anymore since he is already on the outside of the ¡§traditional¡¨ medical practice and since this treatment has not been studied enough, he does not want to deal with the medical boards than he already does due to his practice. Kinda sad since they do need more doctors to really study this. I told him that I really wanted to do another round soon to get this weight off that I gained since the thyroid is tanked but suggested that I wait and see how it goes with the new meds. I agreed, no next round for me in September.

I am still going to follow the Leptin reset and eat my BAB with lots of protein and fats but as my garden harvest starts kicking in, eat as many veggies from it as I can. I have some BEAUTIFUL tomatoes, cucumbers, some non-goat eaten cabbage and squash coming in. I would have had a great rutabaga if the stupid goats would not have eaten them¡Kgrrrrr, goat meat anyone. Still going to continue my cold baths in hopes that it will help boost the healing of the thyroid. Email me if interested in cold thermogenesis.

Only time will tell if this helps. I have been chasing this for so long I don¡¦t want to get my hopes up too high but I so need this to work.

So, if you feel that you are doing everything right and feel that something is just off check your hormones and learn as much as you can to help your doctor. Traditional doctors are just not well versed in this area. Your are responsible for your health and do NOT expect to go to a doctor and ask them to tell you what¡¦s wrong without giving them guidance.

So, I will keep everyone posted on how the next couple of weeks go. I hope to start getting back into some exercise and in 2 weeks I will be flying out to Denver to see my favorite band with my sister (and to check on the SIL) and do some hiking at Red Rocks for sure and maybe run down to Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs.

Wish you the best and hope this new plan works for you. Personally, I'm pissed that I'm not losing weight, what with being pretty badly hyperthyroid! I didn't get as much info or guidance in the hospital as I'd hoped, but I'm requesting my records this week. I have wondered if the hCG could have something to do with this, since I've supposedly been in remission for 10 years or so. Might explain my thin hair, lousy nails and excessive sweating, most of which occurred with very normal thyroid results...need to find out how to get to the bottom of this hormone thing, too!

Wow, I really hope this corrects the problems. You're brilliant for tracking all this and presenting it to him. Engineering for the win!
