One Thing I've Learned

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

On Spark Coach one day, my assignment was to eat by the clock. The very next day, my assignment was to eat only when hungry. The clock works much better for me. I'm more likely to plan my meals and snacks that way too. When I try to eat mindfully, I seem to think I am hungry all the time and I don't seem to recognize when I should stop. Since I'm eating at odd times, supposedly because I am hungry, I don't take the time to log the food and just fall apart at some point in the day.

Maybe mindful eating is in my future but, for now, I'll stick to the clock. Meals and snacks don't have to be at an exact time but I do need to wait three to four hours before eating again. I don't have a medical reason to eat more often so I surely won't be fainting away from hunger if I wait.

Interesting experiment. Really fascinating. I'm totally a planner. I eat more small 100 calorie type snacks in between meals now, but they're all planned. Like you, I would simply eat random things and forget to track, and I'm not willing to let myself do that, at least not yet. Thanks for sharing! :-D

Okay, I'm not getting it! Now that I'm not working NOTHING is strictly by the clock. I have breakfast at some point between 6AM and 8:30. Sometimes a snack around 9:30-10 if I ate early. Lunch has been around 11:30 to 1:30 depending on when I ate breakfast and what I'm doing-oh and if I'm with ERIK. Light snack- fruit or veggies, sometimes with a bit of cheese. Dinner is between 5:30 and 7PM. Evening snack around 8:30-9 if I didn't have dessert and want a piece of chocolate or some fruit. So I know I'm not always eating by the clock, but I'm not always eating because I'm hungry. Now I've been horrible tracking since I messed up my page, and several other excuses. I need to get back to my tablet when I can't get to the computer.

I think I fall between the two. The trick for me is making sure that I eat something at regular times since going too long between meals or snacks makes me lose my head...but it's a hard thing to eat "the right things in the right amounts" Traveling today, I did pretty well kind of but adding it up the numbers were miserable and I also did not get all my colors today...I feared my home made trail mix would be prohibited at the border so didn't bring it and I could have it appears and should have too...sigh
the worst thing is sitting in the car for 11 hours and even though I paced around the car whenever he stopped it didn't add up to much..did wall push ups though..points for that?

That was such a good experiment to do. I think I probably do better by the clock too. Keep reminding us of these important things.

I'm not able to eat only when hungry....because I'm able to convince myself that I'm hungry whenever I "want" something. I hope to get to mindful eating someday too, but for now, I'm with you, eating by the clock.

Great post. I find that my biorhythms seem to have me doing both. If left to my own devices, I have a light breakfast and lunch, and need a snack at 10 (and, as I'm writing this, my stomach alarm is ringing) and at 2. Dinner depends on if I'm working at J#2. I fall apart if we are traveling or if we go out to eat somewhere where it is difficult for me to do good portion control. And Chinese kills me. It's not even that I love it -- between the portion control problems and salt, it just kills me. I can portion control with Japanese food, but, again, the salt hurts.

The last few days I haven't been eating much at all. With what happened to my daughter, and with this stomach bug, I haven't had any appetite. So eating when I'm hungry vs eating by a clock is hard to do right now.

(on the plus side, I have been losing weight through all of this!)
