I've had a pretty severe case of the workout doldrums for the entire summer (probably since before that...). I needed a way to shake things up, make it enjoyable again. I have recently discovered that Jillian Michaels' Six Week 6-Pack workout (level 1) is available on YouTube. A couple of days ago, I decided to give it a try. I went perusing, with the intention of picking out a Zwow to do for the day before going for my 3 mile run, and found this little gem instead. My midsection is pretty much the bane of my existence. I know we all carry weight differently, and for me, it seems that any extra ounce I pick up goes right to my tummy. I know you can't really spot-tone, but I think targeting my trouble zone will make me more aware of everything I am doing to my own detriment. I've done the workout 3 times now, it's about 35 minutes long and will leave you pretty sweaty by the end of it.
In addition to the core work, I have been running more consistently. Yay! Saturday, I did the video in the morning and did a 3 mile run in the evening. I felt like I was FLYING out there (I timed myself, so I know I wasn't really, but I didn't feel like I was running in quicksand, which sometimes happens when I've been slacking off). Then Sunday I decided to do hills. I never do hills. I never do anything fancy when it comes to my running, actually. I don't do tempo runs. I don't do sprints. I just...run. I walk when I need to, and on a good day I can keep up 10 min miles for 4 to 5 miles.
Well, the Riverwalk trail here in town has this one beast of a hill 1.25 miles in. I geared up (iPod and HRM), slugged some water, stretched, and had a nice easy run out to the top of the hill. I strolled down, paused at the bottom, stared up at my nemesis, and took off. I wasn't sure how many repeats I would work in. After 4, I decided if I could do 8 altogether, I would be pleased with that and call it a day. I got some strange looks. I got a couple of "atta girl-s" and "so you're doing hills today?" 8 repeats took me around 18 minutes (I wasn't super strict about the timing) and then I headed back. I tried to run back, but ended up walking most of the way. My legs felt like jello. I call that a win. I took yesterday as a rest day after all those mean hills and started today off with the video again. She suggests doing it 5 times a week for 6 weeks, so hopefully that will help me fit back into my jeans by the time the cooler weather arrives.
