I'm about ready to get some sleep - I stayed home today, but will most likely go to work tomorrow.
Today I was really glad I stayed home and rested. I did take some time right before lunch to go outside and relax on the patio. Today was one of those days that make living in Florida worth the hurricanes and heat - Warm, with a wonderful cool breeze!
For all of you that live in Florida, I have to tell you that the most wonderful thing you can plant in your yard is a pineapple! The next time you buy one, save the top. Set it aside and let it "scab over" for a day or two, and when it's dry to the touch, either plant it in a sunny area in your yard (remember, it will need about 4 feet of space eventually!), or start it out in a pot and transplant it to the yard or garden when it's growing well. It will take about a year to a year and a half before you see any buds, so be patient.
Remember that photo I posted a while back of the little pineapple starting to bud off the side of my plant?
That pretty little purple thing grew into a full-sized pineapple! After a little research, I found that I needed to harvest the fruit when the sides start to turn yellow. Which it did Saturday, so I took a sharp knife and harvested it. First, I cut off the bottom - I can't tell you how wonderful a freshly picked pineapple smells when you cut it! Next, I removed the top (and yes, I saved it to plant), and began cutting the rind off. I swear, I have never in my life tasted anything so delicious as this fresh pineapple! It's so good, it was hard to share!
Now, there is another shoot starting on the plant in my front yard. I want a few plants in the yard simply because now the wait for a new fruit to get ripe will be maddening!
Okay - Now I need to get some sleep! Well, maybe go out to the kitchen for one more bite of that pineapple......
