Hey All!

Sunday, August 25, 2013

I've been busy as heck, I guess that's nothing new! I've been finishing my Mom's bathroom remodel in the Midwest. It's been taking a long time, in the past 5 weeks I've been sick for two of them and out of town for about another two. Before that, I was here for a couple of weeks, then in Denver and New Mexico... so I'm almost done, but keep getting interrupted.

My running has been going well since focusing on the 5K distance this year. Scored first place woman in the 18+ category in a small 5K last weekend with a time of 23:46, or a pace of 7:40 per mile. Last Monday, the last workout before getting sick (again), I ran 400m intervals with negative splits in the 6:45-6:25/mile range. Right now my workouts vary and are anywhere from 5-9 miles long, six days a week with two days of a Power Circuit/Kettlebells class for all over strength. I feel I've just begun with this new phase of my running career.

My weight loss has been so-so, I had about 10.2 lbs to lose but then lost focus. I don't mean that I slacked off, more that I (forgot that I had) dropped to shorter distances this year so I could focus on losing weight. So... I started focusing on performance over weight loss, and my times were going down but the weight loss plateaued. I know I need to lose the weight to take my running to the next level. So, I am going to re-target efforts on that, and am motivated. It seems you can focus on weight loss OR performance, but not really both. That makes me sort of sad... but I know it's only temporary.

It is difficult trying to balance hard training with dieting, as determining a calorie range is tough with the remodeling work I do. I am now trying Sparkpeople's new most active calorie range and manually inputting my exercise, and will see how that goes. I was wearing a FitBit, but it was undercalculating my calories, and I was starving all the time. The Bodymedia armband before that was overestimating and I barely lost anything. So trying to find a balance that helps me to lose at a moderate rate.

As for the illness, I've had mysterious stomach pains two separate weeks in the past month. The last trip took me to urgent care (if I had better medical insurance I would have probably gone to the ER). No solid diagnosis made because they didn't have the right equipment there, but my white blood cell count was elevated and "to the left," whatever that means, so I'm on an antibiotic for a week. Hopefully this will clear it up and it won't come back again.

On the job front, I'm still without one and figuring things out. I may have a 1-year contract job opening up in Orlando, Florida starting in October, I'll know more details in the next few weeks. Or, I may go back to Seattle because the job market is good there and most of my things are still there. I am nervous about the SAD I get in the wintertime there, so if things get bad... I'll move again, though I'm not sure where. So... things still up in the air for that part of it!

Hope all is well with everyone! I'm going to try to post more regularly again. I think I'm driving all my Facebook friends crazy with my workout updates, and I thought, why am I just not posting them to Spark again?? LOL!

Good to hear about life! That's really frustrating about stomach pains: I have IBS, which basically is a diagnosis of, "Dude, your digestive system HATES you... and we have no idea why." For me, my body will just randomly decide to hold on to a ton of gas and cramp up till I can't move.

Hopefully yours isn't that, and it's something easily dealt with!

Glad to hear about you!

I'm such a bad spark friend. I kept wondering what happened to you but never following up. Glad to hear you're doing pretty well.

I'm a WW member going back over 20 yrs, but for me the real magic is in the support of the meetings. And I've made goid friends via my meetings, too.

Oh, & I am finally on FB. I write about my running at chocolaterunsjudy.

Hi Tri-Babe! Glad to see you are being proactive and getting the healthcare you need. Hopefully they will figure it out soon and find a treatment.

Don't let not having a job right now stress you out - sounds like you are very busy and occupied, a good thing! I get SAD too, in the winter, as well as around this time of year which is so weird because I get plenty of sunlight. Who in the world can explain these things? No one.

Major congrats on first place, your 5k time is out of this world! You are a bionic woman. : )

Yes, take care of the job first be it Orlando or Seattle. The SAD in Seattle is survivable. Take plenty of Vit D and do light therapy. They sell those portable light unit. A trip up the mountain also helps as more sunshine up there. Also, plan on taking a week of vacation to some place sunny (Orlando? LOL) in mid winter. A good target is just before or after Xmas, since the shortest day is Dec 22. Don't stay there the whole winter. It'll kill you. I still have a storage in Seattle. Hope this helps.

So good to hear from you---been worried when I did not hear from you---congrats on placing first in the run---no surprise to me! Glad to hear there are job opportunities that might work out for you---I really do think the Florida one would work best for your SAD more than the Seattle one---but it will be good for you to be back in the workforce---I think that would also help the SAD back in Seattle if you actually had a schedule that you could work around---think being in limbo is also not good for you. Sure hope the antibiotic works.

Hi Tri_Babe! Good to hear about you. I haven't been on for awhile either. I hope your health improves and you figure out your calories and activity. If you do, let me know! I quit wearing the bodymedia arm band too. It wasn't doing me much good either. But I'm not sure if it was me or the arm band. At any rate, I'm done with it for awhile. I wore it long enough. I can still see where it was on my arm!
Take care, and good luck with everything!! Ali
