Scary when the phone rings at 5am

Sunday, August 25, 2013

Yep, the phone rang at 5am and it was my FIL in a weak voice saying that he needed my DH. So my DH rushed off to see what was up. The good news is that he only lives live 5 minutes away. So the strong laxative that the nurse had given my FIL kicked in and he was on the bedpan all night. I know too much information, but it all is good. He was so uncomfortable yesterday and his stomach was so bloated and tight and he was in pain as he couldn't "go". So the doctor prescribed the laxative that my DH and I picked up and took over. My FIL called as he was having trouble communicating with the nurse and wanted the bedpan removed as it was beginning to hurt his butt. So my DH got it all straightened out and the nurse checked his vitals and all was good. No fever, so no infection, good blood pressures, etc. My FIL kept apologizing and said that he was frustrated as he felt "helpless". My DH was able to tell him that his is "helpless" right now but not to worry that is what the nurses are for and they all seem to care very much for him. So my FIL calmed down and by the time my DH left was sleeping. It has to be so hard to not be able to move at all and have to use a bed pan. One thing I have never experienced. But my FIL did say that his stomach felt so much better so I think he will have a better day today.
We just walked the dogs and will go over soon and check on him.

Come Tuesday it will be one week down of the two weeks that he has to be completely on his then only one more week.

I do hope all of you are doing great this Sunday. Have a terrific day.

It is the pain pills that are causing his problems and once he comes off of them it will go away. Glad that he is feeling better after his "move"

We have a lot of people come into the ER because of "abdominal pain" that turns out to be from constipation. Poor FIL!

How incredibly difficult that situaton would be anyhow, but for your FIL to not be able to communicate with the nurse in charge of his care at this time must have made the discomfort so much more frustrating! Glad it all, um, worked out well!

It is very hard and very frustrating when you are used to being independent to suddenly be thrust into being dependent. I am glad you DH could help his dad out and solve the dilemma.

I'm sure it must be hard for FIL to be so confined but if in the end he is with out pain it will be worth it.

Those nurses are are blessed to be caring for someone with such great family support. If your FIL were in the building I work in I would definitely tell you and DH how much we appreciate that.

Your DH is a good, supportive son. I can see why your FIL might feel distressed about this unfortunate turn of events and am glad they've fixed things. It sounds like he's having a rough time, poor fellow... Healing thoughts to him.
