Marathon Training Week 18: Arriving

Saturday, August 24, 2013

In church last week the pastor spoke about how we never "arrive", this is a journey that we are always on because we are never going to be perfect. Ever. But it's nice to day dream about, the day where we have everything we need and want. But, through Jesus, we already do.

There isn't a secret recipe to arriving. No map, coordinates, instructions. You simply continue on the straight path, put one foot in front of the other, and keep your eyes open. Every minute is a new opportunity to do the right thing, to become the person that God already sees inside of you, waiting to break out.

I do know the way to ensure that you don't arrive at your destination, or at least to detour you. By looking back. When we look back we cast doubt on our former decisions, decisions we may have worried about, prayed about, slept on. Decisions that didn't come lightly. By looking back, we allow our minds to second guess, we allow a foot hold for the enemy to grip onto. Just a small crack is enough. The devil delights in fissures. Lies and cracks are his foundation, where as God's are firm, solid and sure ground. We don't slip, like shifting sand on His path.

"But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand" - Matthew 7:26

Genesis 19 tells the story of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot was set aside by God, so the angels made sure Lot, his wife, and his two daughters left before God destroyed the city (Genesis 19:13). As they fled, the angels warned them, "Escape for your life! Do not look behind you, and do not stay anywhere in the valley; escape to the mountains, or you will be swept away" (Genesis 19:17).

Lot ran, his daughters close behind. “But his wife, from behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt” (Genesis 19:26).

She lagged behind. She turned and watched the flaming sulfur fall from the sky, consuming everything she valued. Then it consumed her. The Hebrew for “looked back” means more than to glance over one’s shoulder. It means to regard, to consider, to pay attention to. The Scriptures don’t say whether her death was a punishment for valuing her old life so much that she hesitated in obeying, or if it was a simple consequence of her reluctance to leave her life quickly. Either she identified too much with the city—and joined it—or she neglected to fully obey God’s warning and she died.

Do i think this is harsh? Of course. But it illustrates a point. We’re fortunate to receive similar warnings. Ephesians 4:22-24 tells us to take off the old self which is ruled by sin and be renewed, putting on the new self that is in the likeness of God. Similarly, 1 John 5:16 says that willful, deliberate sin can lead to death. Lot’s wife wasn’t able to accept that. What she chose to value in her heart led her to sin, which led to her death. I learned first-hand about not looking back, quite literally. As I was on a night run last week I saw a man that scared me on my run. I don't normally run at night, but sometimes with my schedule it is unavoidable. This man, I feel, purposely scared me last week because I was a woman alone running and he could tell I was scared. Well this week I took a different route, but at the same time of night. I don't run with mace or anything to protect myself with. And admittedly I do have an active imagination. So on this run I felt someone looking at me, and across the street was the same man from last week, and he was riding his bike slowly and was looking at me. I ran so fast. I was close to home. I looked behind to make sure he wasn't following me like he did last week. And then it happened. I tripped over myself and fell. Hard.

My husband wrapped up my leg and took really good care of me, but even walking hurt. I didn't run the rest of the week, and was nervous about the 16 mile group run that was to be on Saturday.

I laughed at the situation, God certainly does have a sense of humor, and the theme lately in my life has been "Don't turn back." And then when I do, quite literally, look back the consequence is pain and regret. I don't need more of a sign than that!

My leg is healing, but still hurts every time I step on it. But I stand firm in my faith and get strength there, and I find inspiration by not only running for Team World Vision, but I was just matched through Who IRun4 with a 7 yr. old girl named Peyton. The same age as my own daughter. Who IRun4 is a wonderful organization that matches runners with those who can't run, mainly children, for various health and mobility reasons. The runners then devote their runs to their matches, sharing pictures, stories, etc. so that the child is in a sense running with you, and it gives the runner purpose too. I prayed for a match and getting matched after I injured my leg has given me the motivation to run anyway.

My match is Peyton, who has mitochondrial disease. It causes cellular dysfunction that leads to organ failure. She lives with a daily life threatening disease and is on early hospice care. She gives her entire life to trying to better lives for other kids like her as well as trying to find a cure for mitochondrial disease. Here is a link to her page and her story that her mom said I could share with you all. How could I NOT run for her? My pain is temporary. Today's 16 mile run was devoted to Peyton.

God's word says in Job 23:10-11 that He knows the way that I take, and when He has tested me, I will come forth as gold. I can trust Him to enable my feet to closely follow His steps, and keep to His way without turning aside. Lord, please stand with me, as I draw nearer to you, and help me to follow in your steps and ways, and not to deter from the path you have laid before me. Thank you, Lord.

I AM FREE - The Newsboys

Through you the blind will see
Through you the mute will sing
Through you the dead will rise
Through you all hearts will praise
Through you the darkness flees
Through you my heart screams
I am free
Yes, I am free

Through you the kingdom comes
Through you the battle's won
Through you I'm not afraid
Through you the price is paid
Through you there's victory
Because of you my heart sings
I am free
Yes, I am free

Into marvelous light I'm running
Out of darkness, out of shame
By the cross You are the truth
You are the life, You are the way

I once was fatherless
A stranger with no hope
Your kindness wakened me
Awakened me, from my sleep

Your love it beckons deeply
A call to come and die
By grace now I will come
And take this life, take Your life

Sin has lost it's power
Death has lost it's sting
From the grave You've risen

Into marvelous light I'm running
Out of darkness, out of shame
By the cross You are the truth
You are the life, You are the way

My dead heart now is beating
My deepest stains now clean
Your breath fills up my lungs
Now I'm free, now I'm free

Sin has lost it's power
Death has lost it's sting
From the grave You've risen

Lift my hands and spin around
See the light that I have found
Oh the marvelous light
Marvelous light

You are good You are good
When there's nothing good in me
You are love You are love
On display for all to see
You are light You are light
When the darkness closes in
You are hope You are hope
You have covered all my sin

You are peace You are peace
When my fear is crippling
You are true You are true
Even in my wandering
You are joy You are joy
You're the reason that I sing
You are life You are life
In You death has lost its sting

(Oh) I'm running to Your arms
I'm running to Your arms
The riches of Your love
Will always be enough
Nothing compares to Your embrace
Light of the world forever reign

You are more You are more
Than my words will ever say
You are Lord You are Lord
All creation will proclaim
You are here You are here
In Your presence I'm made whole
You are God You are God
Of all else I'm letting go

My heart will sing no other Name
Jesus Jesus

BY YOUR SIDE - Tenth Avenue North

Why are you striving these days
Why are you trying to earn grace
Why are you crying
Let me lift up your face
Just don't turn away

Why are you looking for love
Why are you still searching
As if I'm not enough
To where will you go child
Tell me where will you run
To where will you run

'Cause I'll be by your side wherever you fall
In the dead of night whenever you call
And please don't fight these hands that are holding you
My hands are holding you

Look at these hands at my side
They swallowed the grave on that night
When I drank the world's sin
So I could carry you in
And give you life
I want to give you life

And I'll be by your side wherever you fall
In the dead of night whenever you call
And please don't fight these hands that are holding you
My hands are holding you

Here at my side wherever you fall
In the dead of night whenever you call
And please don't fight these hands that are holding you
My hands are holding you

'Cause I, I love you
I want you to know
That I, yeah I'll love you
I'll never let you go, no, no

And I'll be by your side wherever you fall
In the dead of night whenever you call
And please don't fight these hands that are holding you
My hands are holding you

Here at my side wherever you fall
In the dead of night whenever you call
And please don't fight these hands that are holding you
My hands are holding you
Here at my side, my hands are holding you

It is never a bad idea to carry mace when you are running alone in today's world. I never go on my runs without it.

Love it! So much inspiration in this blog!

Love what you said about not looking back!

Even after your fall, you still ran 16 miles! So amazing!

That is wonderful that you are able to run with such purpose, and for an organization as well as a child who cannot run!

Great job on all you're doing. All God is showing you! So much progress,
    So much transformation!

God's Blessings my friend and sister in Christ, all I will add to this Blog is a hearty AMEN and a Scripture that has come to mind on "Running the Race"...You are a Shining Example for Jesus, you are His Hands extended wherever you go, Keep Shining for Jesus my friend, indeed as you go about here on SP you are planting seeds of Righteousness wherever you plant your feet.... emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

    Striving for a Crown

    1 Corinthians 9:24-25

24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. 25 And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown.

I loved reading this blog, thank you again for sharing from your heart and testifying to the goodness, mercy and grace of God. the pic with the saying that God's word is not just information, it is for our transformation is so spot on. Reminds me of the lyrics... "Beauty for ashes, strength for tears". Changing us one day at a time from the inside out. :)

Run on sista, run strong, knowing that the Lord has you covered everywhere you plant your feet.
