Detox beet juice recipe

Saturday, August 24, 2013

I ate some really sh!tty food yesterday -- food that I am sensitive to. So, today I'm feeling achey, sore, and just bleh.... and I'm trying to get back to feeling healthy!

So I slapped together some of the most detoxifying/antioxidant rich fruits and veggies I knew and juiced them -- it turned out to be quite delicious, so I thought I'd share the recipe! (it's also really, really high in potassium, which is what I needed after eating too much sodium).

Detox Beet Juice (recipe makes 4-5 cups of juice)
------------------
2 large beets with greens attached, washed
3-4 medium-sized valencia or blood oranges
1 pint blueberries
1 large lemon, peeled
1 square inch of ginger
2 cups of pineapple

Slice everything up so it fits in your juicer, take the peels off of the citrus. Juice it all, including the beet greens, then pour over ice and enjoy! If it's too spicy/tangy for your taste, you can add more orange or pineapple to the mix.

It made me feel a lot better! :)

"Beetroot juice is one of the richest dietary sources of antioxidants and naturally occurring nitrates. Nitrates are compounds which improve blood flow throughout the body – including the brain, heart, and muscles. These natural nitrates increase a molecule in the blood vessels called nitric oxide, which helps open up the vessels and allows more oxygen flow, potentially increasing athletic performance and energy levels." "Drinking just one cup of beet juice can help lower blood pressure, according to a 2013 study published in the American Heart Association journal Hypertension."

"Oranges and orange juice are famous for their high vitamin C content and their ability to boost the immune system and aid the body in fighting off viruses such as the common cold. In larger doses the vitamin C in orange juice works as an antioxidant - it delays aging and age related diseases such as arthritis and Parkinson's disease. It also works as an antihistamine aiding allergy suffers, and helps to remove toxins from the body."

"Ginger is a powerful detoxifier that helps to kick start your metabolism. Lemons are a natural detoxifier and have a diuretic effect which helps toxins to be released from the body."

"Drinking antioxidant-rich blueberry juice promotes mental acuity, healthy skin, and disease prevention. Studies have even found blueberry juice to protect against the advancement of serious neurological disorders found in the elderly such as Alzheimer’s disease."

"Pineapple juice contains a powerful enzyme known as bromelain that has multiple health benefits. Bromelain acts as an anti-inflammatory which helps alleviate numerous conditions including arthritis, gout, swelling, carpal tunnel syndrome, and acute sinusitis. It is also known to aid in digesting protein and preventing blood clots. This enzyme has also proven to aid in treating symptoms of bronchitis, pneumonia, and colds by removing excess mucus. It has even been shown to be beneficial for curing laryngitis, providing relief for sore throats."
