Good morning, Sparkfriends! Well, I have been on vacation in beautiful Newfoundland for the past two weeks and just arrived home yesterday. Today was my scheduled day to weigh in and, with trepidation for what the response might be on that scale, I am thrilled to see only a one pound gain.
We stayed in a hotel the entire trip, and ate at family-friendly and affordable restaurants. The east coast is famous for it's fresh fish, so I had planned ahead of time to eat fish/seafood whenever possible. However, I was surprised by how difficult it was to get it prepared in an unbattered form. Often I picked off the batter. Other times I ordered small amounts or shared an order. As good as "fish and chips" was, I often felt unwell afterwards, which is always a good reminder to me of what my body needs. My other strategies included having every breakfast in my room (protein shakes), keeping a veggie platter in the hotel fridge, carrying Larabars with me rather than eating in an unplanned way, only eating one restaurant-meal per day, and staying hydrated.
I also kept up my focus on getting one hour of exercise each day. We walked and hiked the hills quite a bit during our sightseeing. But, because I have young children who needed their "down time" after a full day of tourism, I also took advantage of the hotel gym twice in the week and went on evening walks twice on my own. This kept me busy and was good for my body and my mind. And I pushed through the post-vacation fatigue yesterday and went for a jog....so thrilled to report that I can finally run farther and my recovery/walking periods have decreased to about 15 seconds between jogging intervals.
So, all in all I am quite pleased with where things are at. My body feels good and my mind is clear. Now that I am home, my goal for the next ten days is to eat cleanly and detox a bit from the fried foods and the alcohol consumption! And to keep up my exercise. I have another transition ahead of me as I go back to work in September and my focus shifts a bit. But if I can keep up these strategies, I should get through that period of change as well.
