I used to think I couldn't run without hurting my knee. Now and then I kept thinking I should try running and then I'd remember.
Last week I was talking with some people about exercise on another forum and someone made the puzzling statement that your knees shouldn't move forward when you do a squat. I knew they shouldn't travel past your toes, but not moving forward at all didn't sound possible. The sent me to a link about the chair of death squat tip, and it still didn't make sense to me so I googled it and found a link with pictures that applied it to running.
It turns out I rely too heavily on my quads and not enough on my glutes and for some reason, focusing on my glutes allows me to run without pain in my knee. I am going to keep trying it this week. I ran 6 mph for a minute the other day, and finished my treadmill workout without any pain in my knee. It's amazing, one tiny change and a whole world of possibilities is suddenly open to me that I had written off before. And I wasn't even looking for running information, I was taking strength training with the bros.
So never stop learning and trying to figure stuff out. Keep digging and trying new things. Don't be afraid to ask questions that sound stupid. You never know where it's going to lead.
