I am not a cook....but I am learning how to cook. It can at times be a daunting task for me. Growing up we were not allowed in my mother's kitchen. It was very small and she didn't have the patience to have me under foot. I was a whiz at cleaning up for her and the dishes though! LOL! In college....the residence halls prepared food.....and if not there, in catering...the chefs did so. Even after college I continued on in that field for several years and the chefs STILL cooked for you! LOL! As a dispatcher for ten years.....can you say CARRY OUT?

Now married, my husband cooks. He too does not like me in HIS kitchen ...and once again...I am a whiz at cleaning up his messes. The men in his family cooked and he loves it.

Me....not so much. I have no clue to what I am doing. I am learning though. I have made many mistakes and wasted a lot of my attempts. I too am a whiz at cleaning up my messes...and they have been plentiful. The first time I made pizza...I didn't precook my crust and the whole bottom fell though! When I made a quinoa mixture for yogurt...I didn't realize the pan should have had sides on it so that when I flipped the seeds over..they would NOT go all over the place. YET....I am leaning!

I have several cook books from weight watchers. I am learning how to stock up better to have the herbs, spices, etc on hand. I have to be frank....if the recipe doesn't have a picture with the directions.....it is a NO go for me! I have to have SOME clue what it is suppose to look like! LOL! My biggest obstacle at times is to KNOW how and WHERE to purchase some of these ingredients. I think there should be a class on that!

So...anyways.....I won a cook book on Thursday at weight watchers. I looked it over and decided to try the HUNTER'S Chicken! I had everything it called for much to my relief! It was going to be time consuming....so I pretty much gave up my computer time tonight to MAKE this MASTERPIECE!

My husband was not so thrilled. He wanted hot dogs on the grill. I told him that I had planned on this and not to worry...I had it handled! ME! LOL!

He was skeptical and went outside to GRILL his dogs!


WELL.......first of all.......I cannot TELL you how many pots I had to go thru to make this dish. I thought I was fine till I had to KEEP adding stuff to the recipe! LOL! Oh well....hey....living up to my talent...cleaning up the kitchen!

IT actually turned out ......WONDERFUL! It smelled so good......and I was really QUITE pleased.

Greg came in with his dogs...and wanted to know if I wanted one.

LOL.....

NOT WHEN I HAVE THIS SCRUMPTIOUS DISH!

.......

wow.......he asked if he could have some........and was I going to share! OF COURSE! There was enough for tonight and several meals for the upcoming days!



Today..........I made a decision to take the time to make something different.......and healthy for a dinner. ......I made a choice .....................trying something NEW or playing on the computer. Hot dogs would have allowed me to PLAY on the computer.






It is getting easier and easier to make sacrifices.....because I WANT the end result.........




Funny.....I get so caught up in my virtual world......that I have lost something in my daily world. I can have both......with a balance. ........and ........it is working........ I keep what and who is important to me.......and yet.......exploring and participating in my new healthy world at the same time.




and the world .....my world...has never looked so.....

    Mary - hey don't let the disasters keep you from trying. Hey I am a trained chef and I still have some things you can't eat. Don't even ask about the first time I tried to make lamb stew. I m ean even the DOG would not touch it. Now that is bad.

Just keep trying and you will find out what you like and what you don't. Just like eating clean and exercise gets easier the more you do it.

    Good for you! I love Weight Watchers recipes. I also love the recipes on SparkPeople. I've tried many of them, so if you want some recommendations just ask.

I love to cook, and I still make mistakes sometimes on the size of pan to use when trying a new recipe. No biggie. They are easy to clean if they haven't been cooked in yet. Hope you continue to have fun trying new recipes. emoticon

    sometimes you are too hard on yourself. Everyone makes mistakes even after they know how to cook.
the first time I made chicken soup it said use 1/2 - 1 cup of rice. I figured it was a typo I wanted lots of rice so I just kept pouring it in.
I didn't have enough containers to throw it all away there was no soup just rice.

Well...I grew up in a house where we HAD to learn to cook along with my Grandmother and my Mom and my DAD!~~
And Still, Mary...I ended up with some very disastrous cooking blunders!

My Nana burst out laughing when I called her one day asking what I did wrong when I tried cooking rhubarb to make jam. When I said I had put in 8 cups of chopped rhubarb....3 cups of sugar AND 4 cups of water~~she couldn't stop laughing as I told her it had all turned mushy and went right through the sieve!!
( Apparently...rhubarb & sugar to taste was all I needed with just enough water to keep it from sticking to the pot at the beginning...BECAUSE rhubarb has it's own water! LOL )

    I love the fact you have determination..good for you. Keep it up..and before you know it..you will be a great chef..Just a thought..are there any cooking classes you could take..or you tube tutorials that spark the best/worst of us to do better. Good eating..and how wise to seek out the healthier fare.

    Great going!

8 yrs ago when I lost 40# I was helped by the fact that my husband (I don't cook either) agreed to make healthy dishes. We found wonderful ones in the Eating for Life cookbook that the whole family liked and were super easy.

Maybe after this he'll start cooking healthy, too.
