Protein ideas anyone?

Thursday, August 15, 2013

I was in the middle of a kickboxing video just now (okay, not really the "middle," but only 6 minutes in to a 20 minute video) when I started getting a headache. I put the video on pause, and looked at my calorie count for the day. Less than 1000 calories. Oops.

I made a veggie burger and ate a 140-calorie granola bar, and I already feel better. It's good to know that I can recognize and address a food fade when I feel one coming on. In the past, I might have just ignored the feeling, or taken ibuprofen immediately when what my body actually needed was some fuel.

I noticed on my Spark nutrition tracker that I've barely been getting enough protein, though. What do you do when you need some extra protein? Any ideas for someone kosher vegetarian like me? (fish/dairy are okay)

Tuna and cottage cheese are two of my favorites. That food fade is a killer, I've noticed it myself lately when I don't eat for too long in the day. Good that you are honed in on it and taking charge!

Since you eat fish, tuna and salmon are both really good protein sources.

Cottage cheese, kefir, just a glass of chocolate milk if you are looking for post workout protein.

I do like protein powder as well, I'll stir some in to yogurt with some berries (really a great tasting treat!) PB2 is powdered peanut butter (I get mine from Amazon) that stirs in to smoothies, yogurt or oatmeal to up the protein (and give a great peanut butter taste!)

Eggs are good too, string cheese, beans, nuts (watch the fat)

what about some protein shakes/powders? you can make smoothies or add them to your coffee (chocolate ones make your coffee taste like a mocha). Add tofu? I have not played around with tofu much and I have heard it takes some time to find a brand/hardness ect ect that you like. I am not sure what you already eat, nor am I a vegetarian but those are some options! good luck and I feel you on those hunger headaches... the worst!
