Monday / Tuesday Getting a Organic Garden Ready for Spring

Tuesday, August 13, 2013

Monday off to the City for Healthy foods not found in our Village. What a big selection compared to our little town. I restocked on healthy breads and vegetables today. Next year I want to have a good garden going so I am getting it ready now. I found an article that said if you don't want to dip up the grass to make a bed for flowers or vegetables you just lay down newspapers nice and thick then add manure on top followed by composting material followed by good soil. You are to do it towards the end on August up to the end of September. If you do all this then the grass or weeds that you laid everything on top off die and come spring you are ready to plant. Our new house has a raised bed full of weeds so I decided to this so as soon as I can plant I am ready.

I only got a 1/4 of the bed done today so I will need to get some more supplies to get the rest done. I still have lots of time but the 1/4 I got done looks great.
I had some Hungarian peppers and green peppers that really liked what I did they looked healthier the next morning.

Tuesday I got a good morning walk in with the dog. Did some housework then went to the local garden centre to see what they had to offer in the way of fruit trees and other fruit. I was able to get a plum tree, a good size raspberry bush, rhubarb and some more strawberry plants. I found that our property has wild saskatoon berries so next year I will encourage them to grow as well.

Took me over an hour to get everything planted but they all look great. The plum tree will take 2 years to produce which will be great because in about 2 years I should have lots of fruit being produced during the summer as well as a great garden. I can't wait till next year to see the results of all the work I am doing to get everything ready.

My main obstacle with the garden will be the deer. I am told they don't like plum trees but I know that they like the young shoots of the trees. I am also told if I put lava rock down they don't like walking on it so I may have to get some to put around the garden areas.

Well dinner is being grilled and I need to make some vegetables and a salad.
