Hiking in CO and a Sad Turn of Events

Tuesday, August 13, 2013

We have enjoyed our time in Colorado. The hiking has been beautiful but challenging. I think we've adapted well to the change in altitude, which is good news for our Peru hiking trip next month. We're at 9,500 feet now and the highest elevation for the Peru trip is 14,000. While that's still a big difference, we'll have 3 days or so of easy hiking and walking to acclimate to the higher elevation. I feel pretty confident that we'll do fine.

The sad news is that my brother's former wife, and the mother of their 17-year-old son passed away last night. She had inoperable melanoma and it was very, very fast. While they had been divorced about five years, neither of them remarried.

We'll be staying in Colorado until the weekend and then going home a week early so we can drive to Michigan for her memorial service on the 25th.

Sounds like you are getting lots of experience. Sorry about your loss. It is hard on a 17 year old to lose his mother.

    Congrats on the hiking!

Sorry for your loss. We had a friend (he was only 45ish) who died of melanoma a few years ago. It's a very scary type of cancer, isn't it.

So very sorry about your brother's former wife :(( Cancer steals so many people away from us :(( Deepest sympathies to the survivors..
Great work on the hiking, Colorado would be such a beautiful place to hike, and extra challenging with the altitude on top of it all! It would be especially hard for me, living at sea level. But wow, going to hike in Peru with double the elevation, can't imagine that!

I love how committed you and TC are to your goals. WTG on your prep for Peru. Perhaps you guys should start a training camp.

Cutting your trip short so that you can be there to support your brother and nephew is very loving of you. (((hugs)))
