I boiled an egg.

Monday, August 12, 2013

Yes, I boiled some eggs this weekend.

They were brown, a little old.. But I figured that was okay because I read that might make them easier to peel.

Don't laugh too hard -- It was my first time hard-boiling eggs. I briefly thought about getting an automatic steamer thingie instead. But, I braved it. It only took me 35 years to boil my first egg. :) (I don't have kids-for Easter; I used to not like boiled eggs; my ex-husband had a mild allergy; and when I recently started eating them more often, it was always in prepackaged plates, purchased salads, and even a bag of pre-peeled hard boiled eggs!)

Eggs are symbolic of beginnings.
And for me, this is appropriate.

I took the plunge, turned up the heat, and made something.

It's a step toward fewer packaged things (even if "healthy"), and more frugal food spending.

I boiled an egg.
It may be silly, but I'm proud of myself.

I have never boiled an egg before, neither. Having grown up with an allergy, I never bothered learning. Its actually a running joke in my house. I can cook anything except eggs, even sunnyside up. I ruin it every time. I have no idea how its supposed to taste emoticon

Very cool Jocelyn. I am little surprised that you have never boiled eggs. I have used boiled eggs in lots of things. Eggs are definitely a good staple of healthy foods.

Way to go. Eggsperimenting with cooking/preparing your own food can be extremely satisfying. Yesterday I sliced up red green and yellow peppers, some elephant garlic from my garden, and some onion and grilled in on the barbeque. Wonderfully delicious.

I oftentimes am too lazy and just pop open a container of spinach leaves, chop up a tomato and pour on some store-bought low cal dressing for my "veggies". It was much more satisfying doing the grilling.

May you boil many more eggs and enjoy them!

That's great! And I love that you're focusing on some of the finer details of dieting, like going with fresh home made over pre-packaged. The more I've learned about all the awful things that go into supposedly healthy packaged foods, the more I'm devoted to analyzing everything that goes into my body. It all matters, and all adds up to weight lost and feeling healthier. Proud of you! :-D

Congrats on your first boiled egg! emoticon

At least you did better than my first attempt - which ended up being an experiment in physics. I didn't know that you should start by putting the egg in cold or room temperature water, and dropped a cold egg into boiling water. Let's just say the results were not pretty. emoticon I've learned a LOT since then!

BTW - I found out recently that steaming eggs makes them easier to peel, even when they are fresh. I now steam them for 15 minutes, and unless one has a weak shell, they come out fine.

I love eggs! In Greece we don't use widely them in prepacked bags/meals and we tend not to order them in restaurants etc because we don't know if they are good. So one of the first things that we learn to cook is eggs, because it's one of the greatest snacks.

Try to experiment with the ways you can cook them! For me, they are "potato category", meaning they are delicious no matter how you cook them.
