Signed up for a 5K

Monday, August 12, 2013

Made a spur of the moment decision and signed up for a 5K this coming Saturday.

I haven't raced in a while, and just felt like I might be out of touch with the event frame of mind. I'm kind of a loner, although friendly enough once I get out there around people. I was thinking that marathon training would be enough to keep me going, but in retrospect, I probably am missing the feeling of togetherness I get from race participation.

Another reason I wasn't really inclined to race a shorter race is due to the weather. I'm pretty sure that heat affects me more than the average runner, perhaps because of my age. But, I really feel great running in cold weather. Hot weather is great too, I love a challenge, but I just don't run as well. I've read that some people are not really affected by heat, they run just about as well, speedwise, though it doesn't 'feel' as comfortable for them, they still run as well. But, I'm digressing a bit here. The point is, if I am going to be timed I want to see good results. Darn male ego thing, I know.

So, I've signed up and will let you all know how I do.

Personally if your not effected by heat, it either not that warm, or your not running that hard.

Good luck on the race. I have no male ego and like to have good times when I race.

Rooting for ya, hopefully you get a couple of nice breezes to energize you on the way. I'm sure you're gonna do great! Thinking I might have to make the jump soon to running some 5K's, they sound like a lot of fun!

I have no doubt you will do great! You are the same age as my husband! Smile :) We used to have a home in Tampa next to McDill Air Base. He LOVES running in the heat. I remember those hot humid runs on the rubberized track along the Bayshore, UGH....

My hot weather 5K is consistently three minutes slower than my cold or cool weather time. I won't embarrass myself by posting the numbers, but I think I enjoy participating in these shorter races equally no matter what the weather.

Good luck to you....speedy. I wish I was that runner who could run in any weather. My time slowwwwws down as the heat and humidity goes up. Well actually it is the humidity that affects me more than the higher temps.

Your hermit running style is similar to mine. Due to my kids' schedules and my husband's busy travel schedule it is difficult for me to meet up with other runners near me. I do see bikers, walkers, and other runners out and about, but I am not the "social butterfly" in person as I come across here on Spark.

    Looks like fun.

I am in Spark chat rooms with several young runners - all are affected by the heat. I have yet to run into anyone that says they are not.

Me? I'm always slow.... the higher heat just slows me down a little more.

Keep on chuggin' along!!!!

The race sounds like a good cause. Wanting to have a good time results is not just a male thing. I feel the same way. Everyone should always want to do their best. But, if it doesn't happen just think of all the many benefits of running and keep on trucking.

I have faith in you!! While you're running, think of me who isn't allowed to run for at least 4 weeks. Bursitis in the hip! Ugh!

It's not just a male ego, it's our spirit and our drive to do great that makes us want to turn in a good time. If I'm doing it, I'm going all out! Good luck Saturday!

You are going to be AMAZING! I know it. Just have fun, to me, thatMs what the 5K is all about - running for the fun/joy of running.

Good job and good luck! I know you can do it! I don't do well in the heat either. And a little secret, women have that same ego, don't let them tell you different! Actually, ours is worse! :D
