Favorite Grocery Store Closing? Announcement Coming This Week.

Monday, August 12, 2013

About six months ago, my favorite grocery store announced they were going to try to find a buyer. This week, they are officially announcing whether they will close. Last week's article proclaimed that it looks grim as their potential buyer fell through.

This is awful news for me as I've gotten amazing food there at very low prices. Although there are many other types of grocery stores in my vicinity, their prices are high and their produce inferior. It's like losing my best friend, no kidding. I don't have a clue as to where I'll shop.

We went through that recently. Now there is nowhere decent in town to buy meat or produce. Bummer.

What a bummer. Do you have food coops and farmers markets where you live? I know they can be on the expensive side. I'm blessed to live in Seattle where there are lots of Asian markets around in Little Saigon, Chinatown and Japantown as well as White Center. Because of the high turnover, the prices and assortment of fresh veggies, fruits and seafood is amazing. Do you live somewhere you can access that sort of market?

We use to have 2 nice stores in our town that were just grocery stores, and at one, they had baggers that took your purchases out and loaded your car for you. They hired a lot of elderly men for that; retirees that didn't want to work full time but weren't quite ready to leave the workforce yet. They were always so nice.

Then when the Walmart here became a supercenter store, and then we got a Meijer, both of the other grocery stores went out of business. I just shop at Meijer now, and it's a nice store, but I sometimes I wish I could go to a store that "just" sold groceries.

We are getting an Aldi here in October though, I'm looking forward to it, it will give me another option for grocery shopping.

Sad to see that. Too many stores and shops are being squeezed out by the big box stores. I wish that we could save them, but not all can be saved. emoticon

SOUNDS SO FAMILIAR!!!!!! It seems that most of our favorite stores or restaurants have closed during the past 5 years. Walmart is obviously responsible for local grocery store closings, as small stores are unable to compete with the large chain's low prices. Our three daughters worked for a local grocery store chain, where their Dad had worked during his teen years. Sudenly, they closed, leaving many people without jobs. It was devastating for everyone.

How shocking it was to discover that our favorite restaurant had suddenly locked its doors forever without any warning. This has happened several times, leaving us few choices of good places to eat. Right now we are experiencing the decline of our local shopping mall as one majore store after another has left our community.

Sorry about that. I had the same thing happen to me. Go grocery. The best deals in town. They had QVC clothing that folks ordered but did not buy you could get them at a discount. I still miss them. I heard that they had a store two counties over. But with gas and all it is hopeless. So another discount store came in and it is sort like it minus the clothes. So now I shop there.

It's amazing the sense of community we can find in a local store! Our local grocer is probably feeling intense pressure from the Walmart that opened a couple of months ago just 3 miles up the road. It's very hard, I think, for local grocers to stay in business with that kind of competition. Best wishes for yours!
