Running Happy!

Saturday, August 10, 2013

Enjoyed our 6 mile sunrise run this morning. There were 6 women -- I was the oldest -- and our male leader in our pace group. We made it in just about 65 minutes or about 11 and a half minutes per mile. We used 3 minute walk/1 minute run intervals; it was a little cooler than most of our recent runs so we upped it from the 2:30 run intervals we had been using. The pace was comfortable for me most of the way. Again, I found myself at the front of the pack on the downhill and flat areas, but falling back on the inclines. I took about an extra 30 seconds of walk one time on a hill -- right before our potty break -- and I saw how easy it would be for the pack to go on without me. That motivated me to keep up.

We joined with several other pace groups to total about 50 of us runners drinking coffee (and water) outside at Starbucks. Most of those training for full marathons had not returned by the time I left, but I got to see all the other half marathoners. It's just a great group of people!

Next week I'll be out of town at the resort during the group run, so I hope to run the scheduled 7.5 miles on my own. The following week I'll be doing Galloway speed training for the first time. I know it involves 800 meter or half mile repeats on a high school track. Last year I did the half marathon "to finish" training program, so there was no speed training involved. This year I'm doing a half marathon time improvement program, so there is. Hope to benefit from it.

Some people have just joined us in the last couple weeks to train for the first Lakeland half marathon on November 9th. I'm signed up for that one. Not sure I can PR (personal record) as it is quite a hilly and scenic run between lakes, but maybe. I'm still torn as to whether to run the St Pete Women's half on Nov 24th, just 15 days later. I would love to run it again, and see ONEKIDSMOM (whether we run together or not -- she's running with a relative probably faster than I run), but hubby is talking about going out of town. We'll see. I am committed to do the Disney Princess Half Marathon on February 23, 2014, just for fun. I've heard it is too crowded to run fast, but again, we'll see. Then it will be time for me to train for faster 5Ks. If I'm injury-free and feeling fast, I might just qualify for the national Senior Games. I'm looking forward to all of it.

You know, I only started running as a way to maintain my 80 pound weight loss and increase my fitness, but I have come to enjoy it immensely!!

You are my hero! I'm trying to get into running but can't seem to get the consistency needed. We are in Colorado now, mostly for the hiking, but we did do Week 4 of the 5K 101 podcast last week. But I think the roads in this new state park are too inclined to run up them comfortably (at 9,000 feet elevation, no less). So the running will probably take a back seat until we get home.

You have some great goals ahead!! The Disney run sounds amazing!!

You are very inspiring, Slenderalla! I recently began adding run intervals to my walks as a way to up the cardio & increase calorie burn. I'm starting to really enjoy the running as well!

You are doing fantastic! Its so wonderful to have found an exercise you can put your whole heart and soul into! The speedwork will definitely help up your stamina and strength to manage those hills. After a tough half involving hills, 15 days until the next one seems rather close, its a case of listening to your body, but unfortunately you usually have to sign up in advance if you want to get in. Would be really nice for you to see ONEKIDSMOM again though.
Hoping you remain injury free and feeling great!
Keep up the great work!
