We got back from vacation on Monday night. Tuesday was the "festival of laundry" but Wednesday *the funk* settled in. Neither Child nor I were in much mood to do anything. Tues and Wed I had planned to rise early to get some exercise in before DH left for work. Instead, I slept late. Wed, I forced myself to do a Hulu Yoga video. It was too cool to go in the pool, we spent much of the day fingerpainting, climbing trees and watching Sesame Street/ Nick Jr. videos on the computer.
We cant do this again. We are in a post-vacation RUT! I decided that Thursday needed to be an Adventure Day. As mentioned, pool and therefore going to the Not-Beach was out. My basic roster of tricks is either a bicycle ride or some kind of playground destination. Did you know its not an adventure if you go to your normal playground? Needs to be further away.
Thursday morning I break my lethargic streak and run 6.3 miles. First step done. I ask Child if he wants to go for a bike ride or to climb a mountain. To my surprise he took the mountain choice. We ended up going up Schunnemunk Mountain "Western Ridge Trail" (a renamed portion of the Long Trail)
This is not a namby-pamby hike. The trail is well maintained and blazed, but its rocky and steep in parts. We climb up to the ridge where we have our lunch seated among bedrocks and stubby pine trees. The sky is thinking about rain and we get 1-2 drops so we decide to head down. Total time 3 hours. (It never actually rained) I was so very-very proud of my son. He clearly was struggling with willpower to complete the hike and we took a rest/granola bar break in the middle. Once we got to the top however, he was a BUNDLE of energy. Its amazing how exciting it can be on the top of a mountain.
I think we all get into ruts sometimes. Your life just starts to feel BLAH. My biggest fear is complacency. I put so much work into getting into shape and its so easy to just relax and not do anything....
As summer comes to a close, I want to encourage you to DO SOMETHING, have an adventure that shakes you up, lets you try something new. You'll probably enjoy it!
