Katchin Up!

Wednesday, August 07, 2013

Hi everyone in Sparkland. emoticon It's been a while since I blogged, a little katch up (yes my pocho pidgen is coming out) on wots da haps.

I got through a hectic two weeks with pops and all his dental and medical appointments. I really don't want to have anything else like that for a while. My meals were kind of hit and miss, and my activity was down. I did my Sat/Sun Ride, but not much else. Trying to get back up to speed., so to say, and I have an allergic reaction almost two weeks ago, or at least we are assuming that is what happened. I started to itch, and itch, and itch. It was all over. I tried taking a shower, thinking it was because I was still sweaty from the day. No relief. I finally gave in and took some Benedryl. The itching slowly calmed down, but Benedryl makes me light headed and dizzy. When the first dose started to wear off, I started to itch again, so more Benedryl. I had to call in sick after I nearly passed out, and spent the weekend being very careful every time I went from lying down to up-right and to standing. No Bike ride, either. The following week was brutal. We had a Tropical Storm bearing down on us. The forecast wasn't that bad, it was supposed to down grade and start to break up before hitting land, but the barometric pressure was something else, and the humidity! Breathing was soooo uncomfortable. I wasn't short of breath, in the true sense, but I felt winded all day Monday and Tuesday. My Mom is an asthmatic, and she was really having a hard time, so I know it wasn't all in my head. The storm pretty much fizzled out before hitting Oahu, we got rain and some thunderstorms, but Maui really got some monster lightning and flooding. The humidity hung around, and by Thursday I was looking forward to work, just so I could be in air conditioning. It got a little better by Saturday, and Sunday, I took my first bike ride in two weeks.

Now here's where I have a problem; Every time I feel sick, I stop with the program. I make excuses;
"My stomach is upset, so I'll just east what ever I can keep down"
"I feel so weak, I am not going to exercise today"
"I'll start tracking and exercising again when I feel better"
"I can't go to bed now, I slept until noon"
"I'll drink water tomorrow, the fizz in the soda make me feel better"
I could go on and on. I usually end up undoing all my hard work and determination. There is some validity to some of those excuses, but not enough to justify some of the choices I made Last week. (Wendy's Pretzel Burger, Anna Miller's Farmers breakfast) Maybe I couldn't ride my bike, but a walk around the block would have been better than raiding my Dad's Skittle stash. Hopefully I haven't set my self back too far, though my bike ride time went WAY up.

On the positive, I did start really tracking and paying attention to my food. I switched my tracker to the new style that figures in calories burned to what your total consumption is, mainly because I kept getting the "are you eating enough" on my exercise tracker towards the end of the week. I still try to stay at 1500, but I get a better picture of how much much I may be off, and on those days I do my rides and end up feeling like I am starving, I know I can eat a little more if I need to. I am working on being completely honest with myself, so you will find my Skittle raids are there. I am also trying to work in more exercise. A few months ago SP member NIXY72 Posted about an App she got called Gorilla Workout. I have been lax about strength, and this sounded like a good way to slowly add strength exercises. You chose your workout level, and you get a new set of body weight exercises every day. I am on #4 (haven't done today's yet) and I am finding some of them a real challenge. I am sticking with my Bike for my main cardio (10-15 miles 3x a week), but I am looking at ways to add more activity. I went shopping the other day and walked 2.5 miles rather than catch the bus. When I found myself standing in front of the open fridge, I took a walk around the block. I really need to work on getting more during the week, because by the end of September, My long week end bike rides will end until March.

Any Hoo, did my ride already. Love that calorie burn. Followed that with lunch Spring Mix Salad topped with Cucumber and Tomato Salad and Feta Cheese plus a sandwich thin topped with 1T of almond butter and a banana. Planning on Honey Ginger fish for dinner, so I need to wrap it up so I can go get some ginger.

    I do the 15 mile rides after work on Saturdays and Sundays. I get off at 5pm, and by mid September, there is not enough daylight left for me to safely ride. The bike path is technically closed after sundown, the roads are just too dangerous, and my eyesight is significantly worse after sundown. I can still do the shorter 10 mile ones at home, but I'll miss the after work ones because they actually help me decompress.

    YUMMY!
Good for you that you are being 100% honest and accountable to yourself. It always begins and ends there, doesn't it?
From that place, the success is yours for the taking!
May I ask a question?
Why do long bike rides end in September? (you live here right? In Hawaii? or am I confused?)
