Blog #1 -
I started my journey on August 5, 2012. Twelve months later, here I am 59 lbs lighter. I could have rounded up and said 60 lbs lighter, but to me, every pound is worked for and when I reach 60 lbs lost it will be one of the most exciting moments in my life. Next to giving birth, marriage & graduating from college this will be one of the most monumental moments in my life!
I did not set out to lose a certain amount of weight or fit into a certain size. I didn’t even set out to lose weight really. At 259 lbs I was content with my life. Sure, there were times I wish I were fit, trim and active…but overall I was (still am) a happy person. So why?? Why did I begin this life changing journey? Well at the time it was simple…money!!
My company has a health & wellness nurse and she began a 6 week competition and everyone who completed the competition would receive $25 at the end of the 6 weeks. The challenge required you to have 8 glasses of water every day, for the entire duration of the challenge. This was almost a deal breaker for me. I could go weeks or even months without drinking water. Give me a 2 cups of coffee in the morning, soda & sweet tea for the rest of the day…and I was a happy woman!
Each week there was a new challenge.
Week 1 – no caffeine (I thought this would be the week that killed me)
Week 2 – Eat breakfast every day (I have not eaten breakfast since I was in diapers)
Week 3 – 5 servings of fruits & vegetables
Week 4 – No eating out
Week 5 – 20 minutes of cardio each day
Week 6 – 20 minutes of strength training each day
I made it through week one and thought man, I can really do this. After week 2 I felt better, “maybe there really is something to this healthy eating that everyone keeps talking about”, I thought. By week 3 I still had not had any caffeine, I was eating breakfast every day and I felt great. Week after week each challenge became a part of my new lifestyle. I totally changed my eating habits I was walking every evening and then came my first weigh in – nothing. I had not lost any weight! How is this possible? I have worked my butt off eating healthy and being more active. The “old me” (3 weeks ago) would have quit but there was something different. I had a desire to take control of my life and make better decisions for myself & my family. So I talked to the nurse and she said add more protein to your diet and drink more water and that is exactly what I did. 1 year later I still have not had a drop of tea or an ounce of coffee. Every once in a while I will take a sip of my kids soda.
At the next weigh in I had lost 9 lbs…are you kidding me? 9 lbs? I have never lost weight in my entire life…NEVER. From then on I was more motivated than ever. I stayed on track eating breakfast, lunch, dinner and 3 fruit / veggie snacks a day. With every meal I had protein & freggies. By December I had lost 24 lbs.
On January 4th I joined a gym and joined Sparkpeople. I was working out 3-5 times a week. My body was changing, my clothes were too big. My family & friends have been so supportive. They complement me and motivate me. My husband and 2 boys are amazing.
I have lost 59 lbs…and still counting. Just recently I found a love for Zumba! It is amazing. I feel great & get a great workout. I have had so many other rewards that are not related to the scale. I had to have my wedding ring resized from a 9 to a 7. I went from a size 22 to currently a 16. Last week I wore a size 14 dress…What?!?!? I have not fit into size 14 since high school. I no longer have to buy clothes with an X (or 2) on the label…I am in a large and sometimes even a medium.
I am only in the middle of my journey but I have climbed over every rock in the road, busted through every obstacle in my way. I know that with God, my family & Sparkpeople I will meet all of my goals. Hopefully along the way I will be able to ignite a spark in someone else.
