Flood again

Tuesday, August 06, 2013

So we had a flood in our basement a few weeks ago and it was just awful. I have lots of boxes stored in the room that flooded the worst and lost lots of stuff. It also seeped into our living room and thankfully missed the electrical works. Took a while to get all cleaned up.

When we had it repaired the fellow said that it should be good for another year. The issue was tree roots that had grown inside the pipes and clogged them. So he rooted them out and that was that.

Well Sunday morning my sister had her shower and then went to empty the litter box - which is in the laundry room. She got down there and it was flooded again, only this time it was not going back down. My husband was in the shower so I yelled at him to turn the water off and I started moving the boxes I had returned there - again more damage but I have not looked yet at the extent of it. The water continued to rise and showed no sign of going back down even though there was no water running anywhere.

Finally a big burp like sound and whoosh it sucked back down. And my husband said the same thing happened in the toilet and when the bubble burp burst there was the most awful smell. Unfortunately the electric in the basement also got affected so I could not use my computer etc....

The guy was called back out and said he could try again to get the roots out. This time however my sister decided enough was enough and wanted to have the camera brought in to find the issue so that they could replace the pipe. He is coming this evening with the camera and hopefully will have the pipe replaced and everything will get back to normal.

So the rest of the day Sunday and all day yesterday (and it was a holiday here) we could use very little water. Whenever we flushed the toilet or ran the water, one of us would go to the laundry room and watch that it did not back up. What a weekend. And we could not plug our stuff back in just in case as well.

I will be so glad when this is fixed properly. Now to go back through more stuff and see how much more damage there is. At least no more water came up. Next we have to determine what to do with the carpets as the smell is just awful.

I could have cried but then again thought not much point as it would not really help.

I am not sure if I will be able to post this evening so am trying to get some done here at work. If I don't get all my posting done please forgive me. I will be back tomorrow.

Angela - I'm so, so sorry that you are having to deal with this yet again. Cleaning up after a flood is never easy, but after a septic issue, that's doubly hard. You've just had a really stressful couple of months lately! You are way overdue for some good luck!! Sending prayers your way!!

hope it was just tree roots. I had flooding one year and had to replace the pipe to the sewer, as it was still the original clay and crushed by time. the tree roots were the only thing keeping the pipes sort of open.

So sorry it happened once. Twice is another problem entirely. Sounds like it might not be pipes clogged with tree roots but another problem altogether. The burping thing is not a good sign. Hate having water problems.

Hope things settle down and you can get back to a normal life.

So sorry !! I know it is just miserable to have to deal with. Besides ruined things and having all the clean up ... the waiting to get it all settled and having everything pending has to be the hardest.

Sending prayers and good thoughts that it all gets sorted quickly!!

Yuck!!! We had problems with our septic tank several times earlier this year, so I feel your pain. Flooding/backups are the worst!! Hope it's resolved quickly so things can get back to normal for you.

I have a friend who lives in England and another in Australia and they both had flooding and pipe problems the last week or so. It is truly miserable and your story is even worse. I am sorry. I live in Florida where we get hurricanes and floods but so far, I am okay. I hope it is all fixed now. emoticon

emoticon emoticon We had problems with basement flooding a few years back. We decided to start storing stuff in plastic tubs to protect items from water. It was a good investment.

Awwwwwwwwww! I'm so sorry to hear this has happened to you! And not once, but TWICE! Ackkkkkk! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you so that they clear up that problem very soon. Hopefully, your house insurance may can help you with the electrical. Be sure it is checked out now, as they won't cover it if you discover a problem somewhere down the road from here.

    Take care. emoticon
