Giving It All Away

Monday, August 05, 2013

Yesterday, I gifted a huge garbage bag full of plus sized clothing to a friend. Going through it all was, in some ways, therapeutic and in some ways frustrating. A lot of the clothes, I still like and would still wear if I could. A lot of it was my professional wardrobe. I gave away 14's, 16's, 1x's and XL's. There were even some size 12 jeans in the mix. I gave it all away because there's no going back. I think I will always have a range of sizes in my closet because clothing sizes are so non-standard. My friend was really surprised to find me wearing size S t-shirts. I didn't take offense -- I'm surprised, too! But again, because clothing sizes are so weird, I can be wearing size S shirt and size 10 jeans, even though I'm top heavy! In any event, I'm really glad the clothes have found a new home, especially those fancy bras that cost me so much money!

Someone will sure get good use out of all of your beautiful clothes. I know what you mean about those bras. I pay a pretty penny for mine too!

You did a good thing! I had to give away clothes I really liked too when I hit my goal. But then I went and got prettier clothes and a lot more sexy too. emoticon

I always feel those mixed emotions when I get rid of my bigger clothes. On the one hand, I am SO proud not to wear them, and on the other, I seldom buy things I don't really love, so I hate to get rid of them! I have one friend I was able to give quite a bit to, but I've been this size for a while, and don't have any more to give away - YET!

Just wait until you see her wearing one of your favorite outfits, and you realize how much more you enjoy seeing her wear it!

great job! it is closing one door of your life while helping out someone else! Awesome! So many people think they should hold on to the "fat clothes", mentally it isn't helping them. I am glad you have done it!

Clothing sizing is SOOOO messed up. I can fit between 6-10's depending on the brand. It's all sorts of messed up. And I'm bottom-heavy. How does that work?! My 13's from a decade ago fit the same as my 8's from the one store recently. THAT'S messed up. blah.

Way to go on giving the clothes away. It is stressful to do, but there's no going back!

It's both fun and scary giving away clothes that are too big. It's like removing the safety net before getting on the trapeze!!

    In 1973, when I got married, I weighed 130 and wore a size 14 wedding dress. In 2013, at 150 pounds, I wear a size 10.

REALLY? How weird is that!??

That has to be a great, although bittersweet feeling. Sad to see some of your nice clothes go away, but how great does it feel knowing that you have lost so much weight that you can fit in the smaller clothes! You are so much healthier now! Congratulations on all of your hard work!

It feels so good to give it away. I have not been turning back either- do not want those clothes taking up space in my closet. Keep moving down and no turning back whatsoever. :) Keep going, you are doing GREAT! emoticon

I agree it can be a little bittersweet. My hope for you is that karma, reap what you sow or whatever comes back to you bigger and better for giving that gift. Very encouraging. Thanks.

Awesome! I am glad someone else will get to use your old clothing!! It is tough getting rid of the clothes you actually like the patterns to!

It's fantastic that you have someone who can take your clothes, who will appreciate them. It seems we spend so much time, energy, and MONEY building our wardrobes and then to just give it all away can be frustrating! You're right, though, to ditch the bigger clothes and embrace the new you so you're not tempted to move backwards. Good job!
