Clearing Clutter - The Journey

Sunday, August 04, 2013

Since retiring in May 2012, I have had a goal to clear clutter. From my home, body, life, mind ... you get the idea. Well, I am pleased to say I have not lost that focus. All rooms on the main floor are done. My husband and I are working on the garage and basement since those have been his "collection" points over the years. Although he is a pack rat at heart, he is on board with getting rid of excess stuff. We either donate it, give it away, sell it, or keep the items we need or hold true sentimental value. It is amazing how much we have been able to remove from the house. We have shelf and closet space that is now empty!!!

With the help of Spark People I am still losing weight, but more importantly have become fitter. Ridding myself of the excuses and rationale I previously used to justify eating junk I knew truly was not good for me. That does not mean I am perfect cause I still will have a treat once in awhile. Or a meal that isn't exactly "healthy". What is important is I stay on track more then derailed. Progress is fulfilling.

In this process, the past few months I have even been able to clear my mind. Much of the baggage I carried with me since childhood is gone. I have been making peace with my past. This is where the Serenity Prayer has been so true for me. At 56, it was time to let go of the ghosts, the bad memories and quit letting the past impact my present. Being retired gave me the luxury of even severing some very toxic relationships with past co-workers. I know it is often written that you can control those relationships, but for me the reality was that in the workplace I had no choice but to interact with some of those folks. My position dictated it. Meetings, committees, working lunches, etc. forced me to have contact with them on a weekly basis.

So ... I am continuing my Journey of clearing the clutter. I read a quote that truly has helped me, "if you can't carry it in your heart, or on your back, you probably don't really need it." I don't know who originally said it, but this saying keeps me moving forward. So, if I ever find the author of that quote, I will let them know what a true inspiration they have been for me.

Well, enough written for the day. It is raining outside ... so it is a perfect day to clear some more clutter.

Blessings your way from the "Land of Oz".

Oh, good luck with the de-clutter! I too find it such a mentally healthy thing to do, and it sounds like a great target for retirement.

Blessings to you from Scotland!

Doesn't that de-cluttering make you feel fantastic?? We have done it with our garage, 25 years worth of stuff,,gone.. we took every single thing out and I power washed the floor, built workbenches and cabinets for storage.. tons of space left and I fell great!! Ditto on our kitchen and my new "cabin lodge" room emptied of junk!! It is now an office/guest room!! You are doing great!!
Your old treasures are making somebody else happy now!!
