Another Week Gone By

Ah, where does the time go? It just rushes by so swiftly. Next thing we know, the fall holidays will be here. In Middle Tennessee many school districts have already started back and most of the rest will start this week (or next). For me with no children at home, that isn't a major concern, but it does remind me that fall is just around the corner. August is usually a hot month here, but this summer has been surprisingly mild. I hear the cicadas buzzing loudly and I have noticed some cooler mornings a few times lately and I sense that summer will soon be behind us.

Things this past week have remained busy, but certainly not as stressful as it was during the previous week. I have noticed that my exercise minutes were down quite a bit this past week, though I felt like I had actually done MORE! One of my favorite past times is reading and I was able to finish one book and am almost done with another. I got caught up on a couple of household things and Friday and Saturday I was able to get some pool time in. I still have a lot of catching up to do on the home front but I am happy to have had some R&R time. I feel very relaxed and happy. I need to get some laundry done (all of my work out clothes are dirty) and get a grocery list going so we have food to eat this week, but I am not going to let these things stress me.

Also this week (though I think that I exercised less), I did complete my fitness goals...I did the 30 Day Shred video twice, I road my exercise bike four times, and I used the weight machines in the fitness center twice. I also did some long walks a few times a week. I have wanted to try the stairs so one day I went from the second floor of my office building to the ninth floor where I work. Then I went back down. Oh my, that was something else. I am so out of shape. I did make it up there just fine...maybe a bit out of breath, but surprisingly I didn't think that I was dying. However, my knees were like Jello! I was shaking and could barely walk after that! My calves still hurt and that was Thursday. I am thinking about making stair climbing a once or twice a week goal so I can get used to that. I am also trying water jogging. My husband got me a water jogging belt and I have done this twice. I am trying to broaden my horizons. Oh, I bought a jump rope too! I need to give that a whirl! I hope to be able to do it for at least two minutes straight, though I am expecting more like one. I will build up to it though!

A few weeks ago I blogged about raising my calories up. That is going fairly well. I can't eat too much at once and so if I am eating lots of fruits and veggies, I find it hard to get in enough calories. I end up supplementing with juice sometimes so that I can get enough calories but I am working through this. The first week I raised the calories stayed the same weight. The next time I lost two pounds. The following week I lost one pound. So...now I am only THREE pounds from being NOT overweight and only about seven pounds from my goal. I am starting to think about maintenance, and I am finding articles about this that I am saving to my favorites. I know it is going to be a few more weeks until I am ready but I have also scoped out some maintenance Spark groups so that I am prepared when the time comes. I constantly think about this being a permanent change....I must exercise forever and I cannot go out and eat a pan of brownies ever again....it has to be this way for my health and well being. I do not want to gain this weight again. Also right now my big focus is on toning. I don't know my exact body fat percentage (my scale gives that info but it is so inconsistent) but I think it is hovering around the 35% - 36% range. I want to get that down to around 30% for sure (25% would be nicer but that is going to take long time and I want to make a smaller goal). Obviously the cardio is a must and the strength training that I am doing now is also making a huge difference.

So, as the time flies by, I am thinking about the fall, my goals and objectives for the rest of this year, and best of all, I have some vacation time coming up at the end of August. I need to make some plans for that...we had decided to go to the beach but since we got our pool open so late this year, we have now decided to stay home and enjoy it before it gets too cold. I have three hikes/walks in mind for us to do that week that are close to home and I am soooo looking forward to it!

It's tough to find balance. Too much, too little, and there seems to be no effect.
And it can be daunting to realize that exercise is a life long commitment, but realizing this will pay off in the long run, especially in maintenance.
