scenes from my daily walk

Sunday, August 04, 2013

I thought I would share with you some of the things I see when I go out for my 5K walk/run about 4 times per week. I hope you enjoy these...

(ah...the next hill awaits)

(hills, hills, hills!)

(coming back home)

(taken from my front deck)

(now, a few scenes from the back driveway)

(looking up towards the house)

You may have noticed him in several of the pictures. This is the young wolf hybrid that wandered up to my house and stayed for about a month. He was very sweet and gentle, and looked forward to our daily walks. He crawled out from under my car every morning as soon as I opened the door to my house, and wagged his tail, eager to go for our walk. He stayed right with me the whole way, except once, when we were met by 4 large, vicious-sounding dogs. He turned and went back to check out a neighbor's chickens, I think. I went on past the big dogs, who stayed right at the edge of their yard, and when I was walking back, I didn't see him anywhere. I got home and he was sitting in the front yard, waiting on me. (I snapped his picture. It's the one I posted about coming home again.)

I really enjoyed him while he was with me, but I couldn't keep him. My male dog tolerated him for about three weeks but then became very territorial and began to snap at him. I tried to find the owners with an ad in the local newspaper, but no one claimed him so I reluctantly took him to the shelter, where the animal control officer seemed to be really taken with him. I hope he found a good home.

Happy Sunday, everyone! Make the most of this beautiful day. It will never come again!

Your route is beautiful. I would get lost in the tranquility and probably roam for eternity. But I guess are daily obligations interfere.

Your walk looks so inviting...No wonder you walk it several times a week. Certainly gives you time to ponder, think, pray and enjoy nature. Thanks for sharing. June emoticon

I have a 3 1/2 year old wire haired fox terrier (he may be small but he is definitely alpha) and a 6 year old border terrier (she's the snake killer). They both kill any small animals they can get their teeth on, and they have dragged up entire fresh deer legs to eat from the woods nearby. They don't let anyone or anything come close to my house without me knowing about it.

I sort of miss the wolf hybrid, though. I was able to walk with him without worrying about him or what he might get into. But that was probably only because he wasn't mine. I don't know how the relationship would have worked out or how tame he would be when he reaches adulthood.

My sister had hybrids. The mother, Medora, was beautiful and quite tame. She would climb onto her doghouse in late evening, throw her head back, and sound out a long, deep, mournful howl, over and over for several minutes. Some of her pups, however, were quite vicious and couldn't be kept for long.
