A New Zumba Friend

Friday, August 02, 2013

It has been a good week. I have recently met a woman who fell down the stairs the same week in 2011 that I did. We both sustained the same broken bones in our shoulder. How odd is that! It was interesting to discuss our injuries because no one else understands. Plus, who wants to hear about it over and over anyway. As we were talking I was told that her surgeon could not rebuild her shoulder with a prosthesis. I am very thankful mine was rebuilt. Although I cannot lift my right arm above a 90 degree angle. She cannot lift her arm enough to even shake someone's hand. That made me sad. But I told her that we should do Zumba together. I have done it often and really like it. I told her that I have learned to move as much as I can and be comfortable. Today was the DAY! She came with me. She was only able to do 75% of the class and then stayed to the side. I was so happy that she tried. She seemed pleased to have tried it and said that she may buy a Zumba tape to workout at home.

Because she and I had that similar bond, she did not feel unable to exercise or feel embarrassed of her lack of range of motion because she was not the only person there with an injury. Really, when you think about it, there are many people that you pass daily that have something that makes them feel different.

The purpose of saying all of this, is that no matter what makes you feel insecure it is not an excuse to avoid living life. We all need to get out and enjoy our life. We also need to make others feel comfortable as well.

Really lovely. It took guts to get out there, and having a sympathetic friend makes doing things like this so much more fun!
I haven't tried this yet. I don't have good co ordination.
Is there any slow going zumba thing? For the less fit
and big bodied?

How nice of you to invite her to come to Zumba with you.
I tried Zumba once and my right knee hurt so bad I could hardly walk for a week after that, so I'll stick to yoga :)

My mom shattered her shoulder back in 2011. She can't lift her arm over her shoulder, either. But she still goes to water aerobics. Movement, even limited, is better than the alternative.

This is so wonderful for you to have met someone with the same issues you have. To be able to share the trials of doing exercise with the limitations is gold! I found doing the Zumba DVD's at home really helped get me up to the level I could do better with the live classes. Its true all eyes are on the instructor as the moves are so fast and sometime complicated. I hope you can take future classes together when she feels more comfortable with it.
I have never met anyone with all my issues. It stands out the most when they switch to floor exercises in some of my other fitness classes which I can't do.. But I am doing it for me, no one else.. I love exercise!
Keep up the great work!!

Linda, what a sweet, kind gesture! I'm sure that with your words of empathy and understanding, you opened up a whole new world for your new friend...and the two of you will have a rare bond, having made the best of a very difficult, challenging situation. That's wonderful!!

Linda, I'm somehow not surprised, you are always very kind.
I am sure there is a reason we all cross paths, there surely is a reason for this one.
A nice story, thank you for sharing.

emoticon When I first started Zumba, I talked to the instructors. They were very kind and told me to only do what I was able and that absolutely no one in the class was watching me because all eyes were on the instructors to keep up. They were absolutely right and I was able to throw myself into the routines doing Zumba the only way this white girl can. Of course it helps that they turn off the lights and only have dance lights on. emoticon

I've got to give you a hand. I tried Zumba once and darned near died. I have 2 left feet and no sense of timing for which I blame my Mother who has denied all involvement in the problem! emoticon

So so beautiful! Thank you for sharing. I agree 100% and so many times we think we know what is going on in a situation and then it turns out to be totally something else. Congratulations on making such a wonderful friendship be so healthy!

Awesome message! I feel weird at Irish dance because of my bust size - thanks for the reminder to "dance as though no one is watching"! :)
