I finally found my road bike

Friday, August 02, 2013

It has been about 5 years since I rode my road bike (at least with any consistency). I rode a lot when I was at West Point last time and want to get out on the bike again more. I tuned it up over the weekend and was happy to see it was in decent shape despite a few years of neglect. I have a cannondale R600 with shimano 105 components. It was a decent road bike 12 years ago when I bought it and it has aged reasonably well.

My office is large enough that I can bring my bike in and keep it in the office, ready for lunch time rides. There are a few other folks who ride, we used to have a semi regular lunch ride which would be fun to resume. There are a few good rides from the office in the 15-20 mile range, from rolling hills to big climbs. Today, I tried a 16 mile loop with a total climb of 800 feet, finishing it in 66 min. I can definately feel that my legs are not in biking (esp climbing) shape, but it felt good to get out there and ride.

In addition to some nice climbs, I had a brush with some wild life. I was rolling up to a stop sign and a doe skittered out across the street right in front of me. I stopped and looked for more (when you see one, there are usually more nearby) and sure enough, 2 fawns and another doe crossed right in front of me. Glad that I was already stopping and did not actually run into the deer!

Looking forward to more great rides, have a great weekend everyone!

Yeah, those deer are something. I typically talk at them so they can hear and know there's a human; then they avoid me.

As far as climbing, are you keeping up on your strength training? I found the climbs got a lot easier after I started doing squats with weight.

OOoh, that could be dangerous running into a deer on a bike! (bad enough in a car!) Congrats on getting your bike tuned up!

emoticon Sounds like a great time and a great way to spend your lunch hour! Have fun and watch out for the animals. I had a chipmunk dart between my two bike tires last week as well as stopping for a fawn.

Not shabby at all for a first ride out! Just this week I have started seeing deer and turkey. Whew... signs fall is coming. Cooler temps would be so welcome at this point. I'm tired of melting every run and ride!

I'm really excited to get back into riding myself - didn't resurrect my 1986 Fuji (I still have it) though...they don't make affordable quality road bikes anymore - most are in the thousands!

I settled for a used Specialized Hard Rock Mountain Bike...which is enough for me and how I ride emoticon

Maybe in a few months I'll drag the other one out and bring her back to life emoticon

I am glad you had such a good ride. The R600 was a pretty high-end bike back in the day. You averaged 14.5 mph and climbed 800 feet. Not too shabby for not being in biking shape.

I also live in deer country. This time of year does have fawns in tow. Good thinking to stay put until the herd passed by.

I am going riding this weekend. We have been having torrential rain. Weather for this weekend is predicted to be sunny!

Thanks, Bruce

I've gotten into riding since the spring and am really enjoying it. I have shimano parts as well, on a Specialized hybrid. Enjoy your rides and the muscles that make their presence known!
