Grabbing the pelican by the throat!
Friday, August 02, 2013
I've seen a poster of a pelican eating a frog. Although he's halfway gone, the frog tenaciously wrings the pelican's throat. I think the caption is "Never Give Up!!!" How appropos for all of us here. There are many times in any meaningful journey where we feel like the frog: doomed to a certain failure. Do you grab the throat of the pelican and fight for your goals?
Sometimes we do "fight back" by grabbing the pelican's throat. We get those running shoes on and attack a workout with almost scary determination. A bad day, frustration at the scale - these are our pelicans. We recognize them for what they are and attack them!
Sometimes bad days turn into bad weeks and frustration at the scale leads to hopelessness. For most of us it's much harder to attack this pelican. "Unsticking yourself is not easily done!", as Dr. Seuss would say. So true. Here, maybe we tread water, hold the fort down, hold the enemy back until back up, in the form of renewed determination returns. Maybe these are the times we don't lose 2.5 lbs a week, maybe we don't lose anything. But we sigh and re commit to our plans. We start a new streak. We re-read SparkPeople articles. The behaviour is more subtle, more like subtrefuge, but if you want the pelican out you've got to fight it where you are.
So whether you grab the pelican by the throat or carefully shoo it off your path - you can defeat obstacles. Often when we face these obstacles we're really close to making a breakthrough. We definitely emerge stronger and wiser.
