Re-growing lettuce

Friday, August 02, 2013

In the last few months I have joined Pinterest and I find all sort of amazing things on there :) It can be a great time waster as you get drawn into all sorts of weird and wonderful pins but with a little discipline it is a good place to find things.

About a month ago I found a pin about re-growing romaine lettuce and a few other veggies. I had just finished a bag of romaine and had 2 ends left over and the third one a day later. The idea is that you put those root down in a bowl of water and see the magic happen, changing the water every so often.

Day 1:

My DH, who knows I have a black thumb and kill almost everything green or flowering, was sceptical but was also prepared to be amazed, as was I.

Day 3:

The first week it grew quite fast :)

Day 5:

Day 10:

I am not sure how long it will take to grow to where it can be eaten, maybe another week? Still it is a great experiment. You can only re-grow it once but still... Other veggies that can be re-grown in a similar manner are celery, cabbage, bok choy and some others like beets and carrots.

I have a garden full of romaine right now. But during the winter, I will sure give this a try. If I can double up the produce and pay once, this is a good thing as Martha Stewart would say.
