Challenge Spiral

Thursday, August 01, 2013

So there are two kinds of challenges – the obstacle challenges which challenge you, and the goal challenge you which you strive to achieve. Both of those seem to be hitting me right now. The worst part is that the first one is interfering with one of my seconds…

I have been a regular member of the 8-week, 5% challenges and I love, love, love, my Awesome A Teammates. I have never made my 5% goal but sometimes I even lose weight. I like having the goal – it’s one of those second types of challenges. Each time I do one, I feel like I’m making progress toward my goal of being Fabulous over Fifty, even if don’t lose weight. emoticon

HOWEVER! Between the last challenge and this one (started on the 27th), I started having blood pressure and some minor heart issues. It’s all good. Everything is “just over the line, almost but not quite right.” So, I have been prescribed a very low dosage blood pressure medication. This is a challenge of the first kind. The beta blockers have an irritating side effect – weight gain. emoticon I’ve taken beta blockers before – as a migraine medication, a positive side effect – and I remember this happening. It was the first time that I felt like my weight was out of my control. I have to laugh, or I’ll cry. I was concerned because I had to buy a “fat bikini” because I had moved from a size 4 to a size 8. Now, I’d just like to be a size 8. emoticon

I’ve already started gaining the weight again this time and I’m afraid my weigh in on Saturday will reflect that. I will know that it is not because I have changed my diet or exercise plan but it is still going to feel bad because I won’t be on the “Last A Standing” list. Still, it’s better than not taking the medication and my migraines are gone! I don’t want to let my Awesome A teammates down but I think I’d better take the meds and figure out how to live with beta blockers!

So, this brings me back to the second type of challenge. What am I going to do about this? Well, Hubby and I have decided to up our game by training for a 5k cross-country run at Homecoming in October. (Did I mention that my son will be in his first year at my alma mater this year and it’s my 30th Homecoming? How cool is that! emoticon ) We are not going to change our current routine (the combo Spark 28-day boot camp and Spark Total Body dvds) but add in the extra training to what we’re already doing. That starts next week. I’ve already mapped out what the next 8 weeks will look. I have to print it out because we need to follow a chart to know what we’re doing next. Of course, it’s more than 8 weeks between now and the run, so I will have to figure out what we need to do in the extra weeks. Apparently there are some leaps on this run so maybe we need to find an obstacle course? Maybe that’s what we can focus on during the last weeks.

So, that’s challenge answer 1. I’ll see how the next couple of weeks go before I look for challenge answer 2. This will all be cumulative, so we’ll see how far we can go. It's all going to be okay but it's very frustrating. I'd like to have more of the good challenges and less of the other. Life is what it is, tho, and I'm still working at being Fab over 50.

Listen... I feel the pressure of the last A standing as well...
but let's remember that it's just a game within the challenge and that our air miles are the main thang... LTGL points too...

while losing weight is THE part of the challenge that makes it the 5% Challenge, we understand how freaky our body's get with meds and TOM... so let's just move on. Quite literally... we just keep on moving... Healthy is the GOAL!

and I'd love to be a size 8 one day.... LOL!!!

Please don't feel pressured to do anything not in your best interests for the A team. None of us would want you to do that.

Your plan to train for a 5K sounds like a fun challenge! It's great that your hubby can and will do this with you.

We love you no matter what happens with your weight, and you are emoticon
