July Results, August Goals

My July goals and my results:
1. Lose 8 pounds; switch to weekly weigh-ins. RESULT: I switched to weekly weigh-ins and I lost 2.8 pounds. Yes this is less than my weight loss as of one week ago; I guess my weight loss will continue to be a roller coaster ride with lots of bumps on the road.
2. Get off the Prilosec & other proton pump inhibiters, and control my GERD through dietary changes. RESULT: I DID THIS! Got off the meds, and GERD is greatly improved (not gone but better)
3. Controlling GERD with diet changes -- No wine or alcohol; no rich desserts; no overeating. RESULT: I was perfect for the first 3 weeks; lapsed and had one alcoholic beverage in the 4th week and also had a rich dessert. The lapses made me very sick. But overall I was 95+% on this goal.
4. Calcium and Vitamin D daily. RESULT: I DID THIS!
5. Weight bearing exercise daily; increase strength training; stretch 2-3 x weekly. I DID THIS!
I noticed health improvements beyond the weight loss, with improvement in my skin flakiness, less puffy face, better hair.

My goals for August are similar:
1. Lose 6 pounds. I will continue weekly weigh-ins.
2. Work to reduce caffeine intake.
3. Continue GERD related diet changes. No wine or alcohol; no rich desserts; no overeating.
4. Calcium and Vitamin D daily.
5. Weight bearing exercise daily; increase strength training; stretch 2-3 x weekly

On a non-related topic: Mom seems very down, depressed and miserable. So far the morphine is not controlling her pain but she is reluctant to request the higher dose. The hospice RN is trying to help her, as is the director of the nursing home. She is angry with her doctor, who tries to help her. Terminal illness is not an easy process, and she seems like it is changing her into a different woman. In fact I wonder if a mini-stroke has changed her personality; or maybe it is the changed medication. I will fly to see her in a week.

    emoticon You did really great with your July goals! Keep the momentum going for August! Sorry about your mom~I know it is a very stressful for you. Hospice nurses are usually very good, so I hope your mom gets relief from her pain soon.

    With all that you have going on, I wouldn't stress too much about your weight fluctuations. Stick to your plan and things will fall into place. Good luck

    You are doing amazing things & give me hope that I can get off the Protonix & control my GERD too! You are an Inspiration!
    My Dad was different once his pain required morphine. It was like he was a different person.

    Wonderful progress. As long as you are holding or continuing to lose things are good. The GERD results are really good. It is entirely possible that your mom has had one or more small strokes. What you can do is to love her and stand by her through all of this--and that's what you are doing. emoticon

    Hi Alison - what great, measurable accomplishments you've achieved this month!
    Congratulations on getting off the GERD medications and mostly controlling your symptoms with your diet. I was interested in Karen's comment about giving up cheese... I love cheese, and eat quite a bit of it. Also about not eating for 3 hours before bed. I've joined the GERD team and am trying to become more aware of my triggers.

    I'm really sorry your mother is struggling. End-of-life issues seem so unfair. I guess we all want to just go to sleep peacefully some night and not wake up, but that's not the reality for most people these days. I hope she agrees to stronger doses of morphine.

    Congrats on the weight loss, you are doing well even if you think not.
    You lost weight, YES! Going in the right direction.

    GERD: I have to stop eating 3 hours before I lay down to sleep.

    as I cut out meat and ate Bush's beans
    and in two months my cholesterol was
    normal so want to cut the other things
    out and see what six months will bring.
