Weightless: Body Image Booster: Simplifying Gratitude

Once again -- I received one of my favorite newsletters and thought I'd like to share this particular article with my fellow Sparkers! Note the link I've left at the bottom for the original site. I have found this tremendously helpful and inspiring. I hope you do too!

Gratitude is a powerful practice for building a more positive body image.

But if you’re just starting to dig yourself out of the rubble of body hatred, the idea of thanking your body for anything can seem overwhelming, maybe even impossible.


The solution?

Start slow. Real slow. Start with just a part of your body.

Thank your right or left hand for helping you journal your thoughts or cut up fresh vegetables for the meal that’ll nourish your family.

Thank your legs for running up the stairs or walking around the block.

Thank your arms for hugging your little one at night and conveying warmth and safety. Thank your lips for kissing your spouse and conveying love.

Thank your ears for listening to your favorite classical music, which always puts a smile on your face.

Thank your nose for helping you smell the calming scent of lavender or your taste buds for helping you savor a sweet bite of homemade carrot cake.

Thank your vocal chords for communicating the great ideas to your boss. Thank your heart for beating.

I know this will probably feel strange or silly at first. But keep at it. Experiment with it. Maybe try it for a week straight or even a month.

Write your gratitude in a journal. Or say it to yourself — or aloud — as you’re falling asleep.

Keep thanking the same or a different part every day. Then, over time, you’ll start to feel some true appreciation, maybe even compassion, for your body, maybe even your entire body.

Building a positive body image is all about taking small steps. Take a small step forward, and you just might be surprised how far you go.

Addendum:

I think this article resonated for me because of my recent accident. When I saw my dr yesterday, he looked astonished as he looked at my arm & said, "Do you know what this tells us?" I said... "uhhhh no?" He said, "Your immune system is working extremely well for your body to heal itself like this!" It was then that I thought -- "give the body some credit!" It's interesting too because I take a medication for my arthritis that compromises my immune system. The fact that I healed well & quickly in spite of it -- tells me I'm doing something right! I do believe that just looking after myself better now with exercise, nutrition and rest, I am finally helping my body and not hindering it!

    Perhaps it's coincidence, but I just completed a chapter in the book I'm reading about gratitude. Being grateful to oneself and those around us truly can make a shift in attitude emoticon

    Doing clinical rotations in a nursing home, I really appreciate this. I spent a lot of time with a quad today and two little ladies who were so hunched you could hardly see their faces. How grateful I am that I can do simple things for myself like adjust my own pillow when it is uncomfortable and hold my own cup up to my lips!

With my own body, I have noticed tremendous improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness since I've begun exercising. As often as I grouse about being out of breath, whenever I stop to remember where I was or where I could be heading if I just sat depressed on the couch, I am so pleased and grateful to be able to do what I am able to now.

I am glad you are healing so well.

    Well, I must be on the same wave length...I've been thinking about this very thing the last couple of days! It is good to acknowledge how much each part of our body enhances our experiences in this life.

Sometimes I catch myself talking to myself, now I will be talking to all my various body parts too. Thanks for the idea. You will have to let us know if it is making a difference for you. emoticon
