I was talking to a customer yesterday and between my department manager and I we had her laughing. Sadly, it was about how people treat us at work. I don't know why it's so hard for people to believe how we get treated numerous times a day.
I told her I think part of the reason is because most people who shop at Wal*mart subconsciously hate it and therefore hate us, so they tend to be cruel and condescending.
One of the major pet peeves I have is this: I work in the Deli, I'm 23, I have a college education and am working on further that education. I'm one of the youngest people in the department. People do NOT need to come up to the Deli and enunciate every other word and speak slowly for me to understand what you are asking me for. For example ( the capital letters will represent the extra enunciation of the word and the " . " will represent how slow they are asking):
Customer: Can. I. HavE. OnE. PounD. of. THIN. SlicED. HARD. SALAMI. ?
Me: anything else?
Customer: *repeats what they have just told me in the same way*
Me: AnyTHing ELSE?
Customer: Oh CaN. I. ALSO. Have. A. HALF. PounD. of TurKEY. BreasT, THIN SliCED?
One of these days they're going to ask me like this and I'm going to pull the blankest expression I can and ask in the most innocent voice I can muster.
" what's a pound?"
One of my favorite questions is normally after a long line of previous questions followed with
"Do you know?" I let this one fly out before when I shouldn't have
"Nope, I don't know anything I just work here."
OR, even this question while in an apron and hat cooking something by the fryer.
"Do you work back here?"
Nope, just standing here looking pretty....
Now I'm sure there have been times when someone asked a person a question and they didn't know the answer because they don't work in the department. I work in 1 area, all day, 5 days a week 9 hours a day. I don't go anywhere. In fact we get asked questions about Dairy because we are the only stationary people on the grocery side. I'm sorry that I can't answer your question but I'm in this little cubby hole all day. I don't know if they have any 1% milk that isn't dated for August 10th let me ask someone in Dairy. I do not sell rib eye steaks, but the meat department does. I don't know where the pita bread is, but let me ask someone in bakery. I don't know if produce has green bell pepper in the back, let me ask someone from produce for you. I'm sorry I can't show you were dish detergent is because I'm not allowed to leave my co-worker by their selves and I'm sorry my directions aren't simple enough.
My favorite are the people who don't even look and make a bee-line for you as soon as they walk in the door. "Do you know where the milk is?"
....straight back in the coolers....can't miss it...
On another note and to get me in a better mood. One more day until my days off and after today there will be only 9 days until my vacation and 10 days until the Glow Run 5k. Plus I'm hoping this weigh-in this week will be a good one since I've been doing good for about a week now.
